Canon 40 flash problem

I have a Canon 40 which I have mainly used with external flash but wanted to try the build in flash.
However the build in flash func setting now says that I have an external flash
The external flash says that I have a flash with the power turned off.

However I disconnected the external flash, if I reconnect it - I can use it so it could be worse.
Any ideas how to get the pop up flash to work?
 
In haste!

There is a small micro switch in the hotshoe that AFAIK had some history of getting 'stuck' that even once the external flash is removed does not disengage the micro switch.

If you Google it you will likely find some guides to overcome/remedy it???
