Canon 30D Woes

Hello, I have a couple of issues with my seldom used old Canon EOS 30D.

The first is that it seems the plastic cover for the USB port etc. does not last fifteen years! I tried to open it and it split in two, then broke away from the camera completely. So does anyone know if and where I can buy a replacement? I can see doors on eBay for the battery compartment, but not for the rubber side cover.

But once I took off the cover, plugged it into my MacBook running an outdated macOS 10.14 to use the EOS Utility, I discovered my computer was not outdated enough! It seems the camera only works with v1 of EOS Utility, but only v2 and v3 are supported on my operating system. But this was the only way to set the copyright and owner names, it cannot be done in camera like later models. So does anyone know if there is a way I can do this without having to get hold of a really old computer just to run the really old software?

I loved that camera, and it is still a great camera (even if I replaced it a greaterer one), just a shame Canon want to shun it.

Search for a utility called EOS Digital Info

Don't know if it supports you camera, and of course y0u will need to run it on a computer :)

Well that was an adventure, but sadly a fruitless one.

I found the site and it is only for Windows
But I have Wine installed on my Mac for running Windows software

So I downloaded it
But the zip file only contained some PAS source code files

So I checked the forum section and in response to a problem with a new camera, there was a link to the EXE file
But it could not connect to the camera, which just keeps alternating between busy and the exposure values on the LCD display

Then I remembered EOS Utility will always try to run automatically (never having asked) so I killed it
But it made no difference.

And then I looked around a bit more and discovered my camera is not supported anyway, so even on a clean Windows computer it would have failed.

It seems my camera was released one year too early, and the reason given for it not working is because the shutter count was not exposed over USB even though I can happily live without that.

Thank you, though.

Why do you need to use the EOS Utility? I haven't used it with my 20D for well over 10 years. And probably never with my 5D which I had from 2010 to 2018.

Because I changed my name so need to update the author/copyright metadata, but the 30D predates being able to do that on the body. So the only official way of changing it is with EOS Utility.

Admittedly it is not my main body so no longer gets used much, but I am not a pro and only have so much money to spend on cameras. And it is still a great one, made myself some nice 30x20" prints from it, so still good to have to hand for the rare occasions I want to use two bodies rather than keep swapping lenses.

Which is something I used to do annually when the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run passed by, before they changed the route through London. It is less fun getting up early and standing around in the cold now most of the traffic is just traffic.

That's odd, I thought you could do that in camera. Although I just did it on import to Lightroom. They are still a decent camera, although the batteries a completely dead on mine.

I am guessing it was the last camera not to allow it in body, given that seems to have been the cutoff point for EOS Digital Info. Obviously it does not matter with the final images as all the export data in software. I would just like the raw files to have it right as they stay untouched. I will bring an old computer back to life to do it, though, as that seems the only way.

As for batteries, the Canon ones long since died but the knock-off extra still hold their charge well. Plus their tacky silver colour is now a blessing as it means I can instantly see the correct battery to body combination!
