Is this setup ok handheld as i usually shoot bigger glass with a Wimberley and have no experience with this lens.
It's a walkabout bird reserve in Singapore with nature relatively close. I will be taking a beanbag too.

The 300mm 2.8L IS is definitely hand holdable, with or without a converter. Don't underestimate the weight of it though, it soon gets tiring if you're supporting it for too long. The bean bag will be good - consider a monopd too.

Definitely hand holdable but not light. Better with a lighter body than a 1D.

400DO is another option and my personal choice for lightweight.

I hand held it all day at Castle Combe race track which was about 8 hours. I felt it the next day, but it is doable. Just take some regular breaks and use the beanbag whenever possible.

The Canon 300 f/2.8 and a 1.4 TC is a cracking combination Matty - have handheld all day with about 1k of shots - my arms knew about it that evening though. A monopod is a much better alternative to a beanbag.

Thanks guys, Info much appreciated. May take the grip off the 5D to make it a tad lighter and take the tripod collar off. Have heard it's a cracker with or without the converter :)

It absolutely is, barely noticeable degradation in IQ with the 1.4x on. Awesome lens

I use the same combination for sport, but on a monopod. I couldn't hold it steady for long enough without. If you're wandering about and just lifting it up every now and then it should be OK. Sitting in one position getting fine compositonal control for 90mins is not something you'd do handheld though.

Image quality is still excellent. If you have focus micro-adjustment it's worth doing just to zero it in.

its relative to age, fitness ect.. one answer certainly doesn't fit all :)

Good points, I should be ok, I can handhold my 600mm F4 and get an acceptable shot...Just the once though
Im sure you will be ok, I went to some powerboat racing once ond fogot to put my bimble in and ended up hand holding my 500f4 all day.:D

I think this chap could manage a 300 + 1.4
