Hello,

I have a 300mm F/4 L IS and am looking to purchase a 1.4x teleconvertor. I am just wondering what peoples' experiences are with a TC and this lens, whether it be the Canon TC or, preferably, another branded TC. I am currently trying to establish whether there is a significant need to purchase the Canon TC, when, with the saving I can make over purchasing a Kenko or a Sigma TC, I would be able to add a few more essential pieces of gear I am looking at.

The TC would be for occasional use, and wouldn't be on the lens all the time so as long as 'another' branded TC offered reasonable quality it will do.

Thanks,

Tom

I have the non IS 300mm f4 and use the canon 1.4X (mk1) with it most of the time - I would say that the quality is notably reduced but very usable.

Interesting, would like to know opinions on other TC's...struggling to see the justification of double the price (nearly) for something which does very little. My main worry is sticking inferior glass between my 300 L and the camera.

I've owned one for a few weeks now and I'm still deciding if I'm going to make regular use of it or not.

As sportysnaps says there is a drop in quality but it's not massive. For me the slower AF is more of an issue. It hunts more especially in low contrast situations.

So far I've used it at a trackday, some low level aviation and an airshow practice. The AF wasn't an issue at the trackday but for aviation I did have a few problems getting a good focus lock.

I've got one of these and tried it with various T/C's in a controlled test.

Canon and Kenko Pro DG....little to choose between them, Canon a little sharper in the centre but the Kenko had better edges.
Sigma gave a different colourcast to the images...very noticeable.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Canon Bob, which Kenko TC were you using?

It was a Pro 300 DG.

My comment about the Canon having sharper centre and Kenko sharper edges has also been reported the other way around so it may be simply down to copy variation.

Bob

Edit...all 1.4x's
