Hi all looking to upgrade to a longer prime lens ,can not afford the 500 f4 so its between the canon 300mm f4 is with a 1.4x or the 400mm 5.6 , the 300 would give me a bit more length and is but would the IQ be as good yours gwh

No.

The 300mm f/4 x1.4 is about as sharp as the 100-400mm

It's sharp, but wide open the 400mm prime definitely beats it.

I have both.

The 300 F4 is a superb lens, and still very good with the 1.4x converter.
However with the 1.4 attached af performance takes a definite hit - slows down quite a bit.

I picked up a 400 F5.6 specifically for birding where there is plenty of light and for birds in flight. So far, very impressed with that.

For the UK I think the 300 F4 makes more sense - the IS and F4 are very handy considering our murky winters. If I had to move one of the two lenses on I would be keeping the 300mm

many thanks guys , still not sure but leaning towards the 300mm, have been using the 70-200 and 1.4 which stays on the camera pretty much al the time now with some good results. yours gwh

You certainly won't be disappointed with the 300mm - it's a great lens

I also have both and couldn't agree more.

I agree with Richard and Gareth.

The 400/5.6 is the better lens, optically. No question. But it does need good light. In the UK, you'll get more use out of the 300/4+TC combo.

I was in a similar situation last year, trying to decide between the 400/5.6 and the 300/4 IS. What sold it for me in the end was the minimum focusing distance. I use my 300/4 for closer bugs as well as far away. The minimum focusing distance on the 400/5.6 was a few metres as I remember, a killer for me. So I went 300/4 IS and 1.4x combo when I want a little extra reach. I love it and certainly prefer it to the 100-400 I had previously.
