I want to get back I to shooting motorsports again this season, I have currently bought a 1D4 and this will be the primary body for sports. has anyone any experience of these combinations to compare? I will be mostly shooting motorcycle road racing and rallying.

Thanks

Depends how close you can get to the track to which is best for you. I've used a 70-200 with 1.4 TC at Oulton park very successfully and very happy with it, I've also used the 300 F4is and its a belter of a lens. I used it at a SuperBikes meeting with. 1.4 TC and it performed very well - didn't loose noticeable AF or IQ for me - managed to get some very close slow(ish) shutter shots which I was very happy with.

Live not used a 2tc - sorry I can't help you with that...

With local road racing your able to get very close, at places bikes are passing with 3 feet or less of your toes at 180mph+, rallying on the roads is more or less the same. I would be over at Knockhill a couple of times throughout the year as well as local tracks.

In this case I would suspect the 70-200 would be your better option as the 300 could be a little on the long side / would probably stop some of the closer to you shots ...

Used the 70-200mm f2.8 MKI (the MKII much improved TC performance) with great success for the Czech TT in Horice when a contingent of Irish riders paid a visit. Never had the opportunity to go to Ireland to see the road racing, but its on my list of things to do. To be honest, the 300mm f4 had an issue and needed a service so I had no choice but to use the 70-200mm. If I had both lenses available, I would have taken both. For rallying, you'll definitely need the 70-200mm because of the differing light conditions. Both lenses are great, I've used the 300mm f4 a lot more for Motorsport than the 70-200mm, because it gives you that extra reach with the 1.4x TC and as andyred mentioned no real loss in performance or IQs. Depends what your finances are like, if you got the money I would look at buy both used, but if you had to choose 1, the zoom might give you more flexibility for the rallying and road racing.
