Canon 300 f2.8

Try putting a post in the wanted section?

Picked-up a pristine (almost unused) 2 year old (Mk1) IS recently and all I can say is you won't be disapointed.:D

I watched eBay for something very local and got lucky by contacting the seller and waiting until it didn't sell (he had a high opening bid value).....:thumbs:

When it received no bids, I asked what he really wanted for it and he was sat in my office with it the next day.

Almost exactly the same story here except I went to see the lens while the Ebay listing was live and we did a deal there and then.

Have to say I was a bit uncomfortable carrying that sort of cash into a strangers house though. :lol:

Works extremely well with both the 1.4 and 2x teleconverters and even using the 2 stacked it gives good results.

There's one that sounds nice on the EOS Magazine Forum but not sure if you need to be registered to see it?

[CANON EF300mm f/2.8L IS USM Lens
I purchased this lens new from Jacobs on 26 Aug 2010. The code on the lens is UY0625 which translates to Made in Utsunomiya Japan, June 2010.
It comes as the complete kit, Hard case, Lens strap, Tripod mounting ring, Lens Hood, Lens cap and large cardboard box. Also included is a neoprene camoflaged lens and lens hood cover, which has been fitted since new. A Don Zeck lens cap is also included, (this is a bit more practicle than the Canon canvas one).
This superb fast lens is in excellent conditon and unmarked.
Price is £2995 including postage. If you pick it up and pay cash I'll knock £45 off. Located in Berkshire.

Seems a fair price as even older ones are up for £3100+ at times.

If I didn't already have one I would buy it!

As has been pointed out above its a great lens and you won't be disappointed.

Kind regards,

I could sell mine and make a profit :D no no no no no bad idea :bonk: :cuckoo:its a great lens, wouldn't sell mine in a million years, but ditto on the stories, bought mine off digital depot, Stewart was great, lens didn't look like it had come out of the box mint and a great price to boot. Agree with MikeP about stacking TCs very surprised and pleased with the results. Good hunting for your copy

Unfortunately, you can only stack with a 2xII - mine are mkIII TC's and won't stack. Don't fancy the multiple loss of F-stop anyway and have a 500F4II to fall back on anyway.:D

The lens mentioned in EOS mag would have me on the phone right away BTW.;)

Tell me about it.

Way back in 2006-2007 I was seriously considering going for the 300mm f/2.8L IS USM but it was always that little bit more than I could comfortably afford. :'(

I was watching the dollar price and in 2007 the prices were as below - clipped from an old post of mine;

300mm f/2.8L USM IS from UK $6019 = £2935
300mm f/2.8L USM IS from US $3849 = £1876

I thought I would wait until it dropped to the dollar equivalent of £1500 as that line of though seemed reasonable as the price had been falling continuously...the previous year had them at;

B&H (US) 2070 GBP = 3850 USD
Park (UK) 3119 GBP = 5799 USD

Well needless to say the price had bottomed out and from there just went up & up :'(

Many togs who are selling their 300mm f/2.8L & 500mm f/4L today are selling them for more than they paid for them new so if bought at the right time the original owner could have had 5 years use from either lens and still sell the lens for more than he paid for it! :eek:

Canon hasn't helped by pricing the MKII versions of both lenses at such ridiculously high prices so for most people looking for one of these superb pieces of glass the only choice is to buy second hand and the sellers know this.

Supply & demand at work I guess...I have seen the 300mm go for £3.5k and the 500mm for £5k+

Good or bad news depending upon which side of the fence you are on...

Exchange rates have skewed the perceived value of super telephoto lens.

As the lens' are manufactured in Japan you need to track the Japanese Yen rate to the GBP & USD for things to start making sense. Back in '06 and '07 the JPY to GBP was at a 10 year high (250 Yen to every pound) and now that is pretty much halved.

2006 - Lens cost
700,000 JPY = £2800

2012 - Lens cost
700,000 JPY = £5600
