Canon 300 2.8 IS question

Hi guys

My lovely new (to me) 300 2.8IS arrived at work today and there she is besides my desk and i'm aching to pair her up with my 1D3:thumbs:.

But in the meantime i'm struck as to how big she is with that rather large hood, so my question is What bag would you recommend to fit her in :thinking:

Now i'll be wanting a bag that will fit this lens paired up with a 1D3, but also have room for a second body either another 1D3 or 1D2n with a 70-200 2.8.

Surely some of you sports togs have a similar gear set up to this so what do you guys prefer to carry your kit in.

Also anyone know where I can get a user manual for this lens? or so any of you have a pdf of the manual.

Ordered a 300 2.8 IS myself today and was thinking of what bag I would need to keep her nice and safe. Will keep an eye on this thread with interest.

How much did you get yours for?
 
I have a Lowe Pro Lens Trekker 600 AW II and the 300 fits in with body and hood attached, there is room in the front pouch for another body and I have 2 lens cases strapped to either side.

Use a LowePro Vertex 200 myself which will accommodate the lens attached to a 1D3 body. Still plenty of room internally for a 2nd 1D body and a Canon 70-200 held individually. Exterior zip compartments for batteries, cards etc.

I notice that my lens doesn't have the included strap. Is this a special strap or is it just like the one's supplied with Canon Cameras?

Also should I carry this with a strap supporting the lens or is it ok to carry it attached to the camera with the strap secured to the camera. The reason I ask is because it is pretty heavy and I don't want to damage the lens mount on the camera by putting too much stress on it.
 
It is a special strap that is suppled with the Lens. It is a lot wider than the Canon strap supplied with the camera. I think that would be strong enough IMO if you have now joy obtaining the correct one.

It is the sharpest of all my lenses and great contract and colour, you are going to love it, it also takes the 1.4 & 2x converters well.

BTW - I use a Think Tank lens case for it and it hangs off a belt or bag with no problems, if you want to keep it on the body the Vertex 200 as mentioned previously is an economical bag that works or the new Lowepro Pro Trekker 300 or 400 will carry everything you could possibly want.

The supplied strap is longer than the normal Canon ones. That's because you really should be carrying it with the strap on the lens.
 
Well my 300mm (with hood) attached to 1D MKII fits nicely into the Lowepro Photo Trekker AWII, can't rate this bag more highly, walked up a few hills in Wales and the Lakes with it. Also, room for 2nd body, 70-200mm f2.8, 300mm f4, 24-105mm f4 plus other bits, comes with a daysac to put waterproof, sandwiches in etc (removable), most comfortable bag I've owned...... You might also just about get away with it as hand luggage (without daysac), but reluctant to try......
 
I use a ThinkTank Airport Acceleration (its in the review section on here). No longer have a 300/2.8 but it carries my 500/4 not on a body and 400/4 on a body just fine, along with another body and 70-200
 
Think Tank all the way here too, i may have some to sell soon aswell as im upgrading...

As for the strap, get an OpTech one and attach it to the lens. I use OpTech all round these days and as the Lens/Body attachments unclip from the main strap you can put a set on both the body and the lens and then just attach to the 300 when thats fitted and the body when its something smaller.

My 1DIV with the 300mm 2.8 + hood + an extra body + 2-3 extra lenses + accessories fit fine in the Microtrekker AW, which BTW, I am thinking of selling as I got a rolling bag just yesterday for my birthday ;)

Many thanks for the link to the XL straps. I was wondering where I could get some from.

I have ordered a couple, it was a good price.
 
Just thought i'd update.

not had chance to put my gear in it but i'm loving the build quality and the fact it looks like a regular backpack as opposed to a camera bag:thumbs:

The waist strap can be disconnected, and it has a waist bag at the top which can be used separately. Also comes with a laptop case which is nice if I ever get a laptop:thinking:

Anyway i might put up a bit of a review when I have chance to use it properly.:)

Mine fits well into a Crumper Pyjama Pride XL. It takes two gripped bodies, the 300, an 80-400, a couple of wide angles and spare batteries.... It's heavy but it works.
