Hello everyone...

Ive currently got a sigma 300mm f2.8 which I'm loving at the moment. My problem is... It's a bit soft with the sigma 2x converter attached.

I've been told that the newest canon version would be much better! Can anyone give any feedback using this kind of combo? I'm guessing AF would still work etc?

Thanks for any help.

Carl.

Much better? No. A bit better, possibly. No better at all, equally possible.

The sharpness you get with a telecon is 90% down to the quality of the mother lens. All it does is enlarge the centre of the image and if that's soft, it will be twice as soft with a 2x telecon.

I use my 2x MkIII with a Canon 70-200 f2.8L IS MkII on a 5D3 and more recently on a 70D. I don't know whether or not the parent lens I use will be much better than your parent lens but I've been getting some decent shots from my combo. I don't know if the Sigma lens will fit on a Canon extender though as I think the mount is incompatible. I've just tried mating up my extender and Sigma 150-500 OS and there's no way it would fit without trying excessive force (which I didn't try).

I know a Kenko 1.4x and 2x extender will fit the Sigma as I've tried them. The Pro300 DGX extenders are very good and keep a good level of IQ. I've regularly used my 1.4x and Sigma 150-500 for moon shots on my 5D3 and I get some very good results from it. Might be worth trying one of the Kenko extenders on your setup before you buy though, just to see if the IQ is good enough. The Kenko extenders are pretty reasonably priced, you could get a 1.4x and a 2x for the price of a Canon MkIII.

Anything with 200mm at the long end or more will always be tricky and a 1.4x is usually the best, doubling that length twice just adds more problems but as Stuart said, Kenko aren't bad at all and can be had for very cheap. If you think of the combined price of the Siggy 300mm plus the price of of a Mk III TC it may be cheaper to sell up and buy something at the long end (as long as your arms are strong enough!)

I may be really stupid.... But if the lens fits the body then why wouldn't it fit the extender?

Canon extenders are quite large and the front element has to fit inside the lens.

With my Sigma 120-300/2.8 OS I find better IQ with the Sigma 2X than with the Canon 2X III. I had the Canon TC first and actually bought the Sigma TC due to my disappointment with the Canon. I've seen similar reports from others that the Sigma TC makes a better partner than the Canon. Of course, that's with the zoom lens. No idea if the same results apply to the prime. Either way, I find I have to stop down to f/6.3 at least, although f/8 is better. Wide open I may as well not bother. It would be better to use a 1.4X and crop.

And FWIW the Canon TC performs better than the Sigma with my Canon lenses.
