I've been using my Nifty fifty a lot recently and adore the lens but the focal length is just a little too long on my 60D. I'm tempted to add a slightly wider prime to my bag and have been looking at both the canon 28mm f1.8 and the sigma 30mm f1.4.

I'll mostly be shooting at car shows/events with the occasional portrait shot.

Which out of the lenses I've mentioned would you go for and why? Is there a better lens (similar price range) that I am missing out?

Thanks in advance.

Ive not used them, but to be honest, for me and what I do, I couldnt find a reason why I would want a wide angle lens that supported such a wide aperture.

I've got the tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and to be honest, unless I'm go up super-close, thats the only time the f2.8 is of any use, if I shoot a landscape with it, im usually up at around F11-f16 depending on how far my landscape stretches and my angle to the horizon.

What were you thinking of photographing ? :) I'd love to get more use out of my tokina, my 24-105 seems to have taken over for most of my wide-angle small-zoom shots.

Mostly car shows where I find myself often shooting at around 25-35mm. I love the quality and effects possible with my nifty fifty but struggle with space at times hence wanting something a touch wider :)

thats what i liked about the tokina, i <had> to get in stupidly close hahahaha blocking the view for everyone else, but hell, get some cool distortions :)

Id go with the Sigma but be aware the 30 and 50 are known for dodgy quality control and AF issues, buy new (UK) and you can send it back to replace OR get it calibrated by Sigma for free, buy used and make sure you see test shots wide open to check AF accuracy. Sigma make fantastic primes.

Haven't really researched the sigmas too much yet tbh. A mate of mine used to run a sigma but unfortunately he sold it before I got to have a go with it.

ultra wides can be fun too, but if your in daylight alot a sigma dp1m or dp2m worth a ponder too

I've got the Sigma 30mm Art. As a beginner it's the first lens I bought and it's what I keep on the camera. Not that I have a wide range to choose from though :)

I've been impressed with the shots I taken with it, however I did have to buy the USB dock as the focus was off on my camera. Also when shooting wide open there is some purple fringing too, but Lightroom sorts that out.

This lens is only for crop cameras though so something to consider if you're thinking about full frame at any point.
