Hi all

I'm struggling to decide whether to go with the single lens 28-300mm as above or go with a combination of the other two across the range. I know how good the 70-200 is but I've not managed to speak to anybody that has owned / used the 28-300mm.

The latter suits my type of lifestyle covering everything in one unit but is there something I'm not aware of. Is the image quality questionable or anything else?

For info, I am planning on buying a new 5D mk iv to use the lens with.

Any advice from people who have experience with this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Andrew

Depends what you shoot, if you shoot in low light and or moving objects then you will probably need f2.8 , which answers the question.
The 70-300 without anything shorter than 70mm is I would have thought a bit restrictive and again it depends if you can live with f5.6 at the long end.
I knew a chap some time ago who was a pro but did a lot of travelling for pleasure , he was a Nikon man but he bought a Canon 5DMk2 and the 28-300 just for travelling so he was only taking one bit of kit and he found it OK, but again it depends if you can live with f5.6 at the long end.
It also depends on your budget.

If you have deep pockets (and long arms!) the 2 lens solution will be better but you might miss shots by having the wrong lens on for your needs. You'll also need a 1.4x teleconverter to get close to the reach that the 28-300 will give you.

A superzoom like the 28-300 will always compromise optical quality, especially on a full-frame body - even though it is built like a tank.

This is a good review: http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/426-canon_28300_3556is_5d

You might also want to consider the 24-105 f/4 MkI or MkII if you don't need f/2.8

Thanks everyone for the responses. I think I'm going to go with the two lens combination.

It's a great combo. Next you'll want two bodies to save changing the lenses :) I was going to upgrade from 5dm3 to m4...but I've ended up adding the m4 and keeping the m3 for this reason !

A bit late to this thread as decision made but I can validate that decision for you.

I have a 28-300L which was bought for situations where I couldn't change lenses and needed to minimise what I was carrying.

I don't use the 28-300 much now but my 70-200 f2.8L II (even with a 1.4x III converter) blows the 28-300 right out of the water in terms of IQ.

Thanks John, I'm absolutely delighted with the 70-200L. I wished I'd bought one years ago! Have to say though, it's bloody heavy!

I had the 28-300mm L for a short while but sold it because of the poor IQ. 70-200mmL is one of Canons best lenses.
