Yes
would the 28-300 lens be able to beat my 28-105 on my canon 5d mark 2?
i love the idea of 28-300mm and i feel my kit lens isnt giving me enough range! but im not sure what to buy! if the 28-300 was the same size as the 28-105 id buy it now and sell the 105 but im not sure if you can live with a 28-300 everyday?

Im thinking of buying a 50mm 1.8 soon anyway but im not sure what my everyday lens should be? i love motorsports, like groupshots and anything inbetween.
theres so much choice and without real world reviews so hard to pick what u want!

Give your 5D decent glass. 28*105 is very mediocre from personal experience, and 28-300 would be a doorstop unless you are talking about L version which is just average at best. Think fast L zooms, not slow superzooms.

only talking about the L stuff.
i sort of the know the perfect glass is the 70-200 f2.8 but its not long enough for motorsport really and not wide enough to compensate for the lack of high zoom for what i do!
the 100-400 f4.5 isnt really fast enough but fits nicely into the price bracket.

How is the 100-400 too slow but the 28-300 isn't? They're both f/5.6 in the long end...

I don't see it happening that you have just one everyday lens that's both wide enough for group shots and long enough for motorsports.

Agreed i just forgot to mention the the 28-300 been just as slow! either way its all doing my head in.

You just won't get a high performing, fast lens that goes from 28mm to 300mm+

If you want a fast lens, a 70-200 f/2.8 to go alongside your 28-105mm would surely be best? And you can add a 1.4x to get a 98-280mm f/4 if you need a bit more length.

Or a sigma 100-300 f/4 picks up nicely on the range of your 28-105 (but I'd want to try it out before buying one of these, they seem to be a bit variable in performance).

Ive pretty much decided ill get a 70-200 2.8 might wait a bit for prices to drop but i fancy a 2.8 for the speed! spent too many years knocking around with f5.6 and struggling in situations!
thanks for all your help guys! i knew the 70-200 was the one i just get excited by 300mm and 400mm. have to save up for a quick one of those one day!
