Hi all,

I recently brought a 28-135mm USM lens second hand, upon arrival i found it to have what i would say is a lot of radial (side to side up and down) play in the telescopic section. The lens seems to work fine, except it being rattly. Please excuse my lack of technical terms. As the lens seems to working ok and auto-focuses fine, im just wondering if this is due to wear in the bushes?

Any help would be greatly received.

Thanks

Chris

Hi Chris

I used to own a 28-135 and yes there is some play in the barrel and the IS isn't the quietest about.

It should zoom in and out very smoothly, if the is any jerkiness or a spot where it feels tight, the roller bushes could be going - this appears to be a known problem with the lens.

If you are concerned, def worth having it checked or at least comparing it to another model if you can find one to look at.

Norfolk Camera centre are very good and replaced some roller bushes on a friends at a very reasonable price and the lens was a different beast on return.

Hope this helps...

I've had one for about 5 years and I think what you are describing is probably normal for this lens - my copy definitely has more 'play' in the moving parts than my other lenses - but as you say it does not seem to bother the IQ and I have never had any issues with the shots it has taken.
