Right then guys, I am looking to upgrade from the standard issue 18-55mm IS lens that came with my 550d and need a bit of advice.

I currently have only the 18-55mm and a 70-200mm USM L f/4 in my bag and in all fairness the L-series lens is superb but I can't use it all the time when I am forced to be a bit closer to the action (usually rally cars) so I am looking to purchase something a bit shorter than the L-series but a bit longer than the standard shorter one to replace the standard lens.

The lens that stands out on my short list at the moment is the Canon 28-135mm IS USM Lens and I more or less would like some feedback on the lens' performance from anyone who has experience of it as I can't seem to try one out first - so is it a good lens for motorsport photography? It was originally released in 1998, is it now obsolete? Any good/bad points that is worth knowing?

Any feedback would be appreciated or if anyone has got any suggestions for an even better lens (within reason of my budget, of course ;) )?

Cheers

Claire

I have one, and have used it on my 1d and tbh, I think it's a really really good lens...mines nice and sharp, decent colours/contrast and not too expensive either..I think they still make them but I'm not 100% sure, I know they bumped the price up quite a lot after I got mine tho.. IS is obs a nice feature to have aswell..not sure if this is an IS thing or just mine, but you can hear the IS working quite loudly...don't and have never owned another canon IS so don't know about that one...

The build is ok, not as good as L series obviously, and they can suffer from zoom drop which is a little annoying...

Apart from that tho, it's a good lens, and a nice step up from your kit lens..

Just noticed the motorsport bit to..I'd say not really as it's not really long enough, focusing is nice and quick tho, so in that aspect yes...depends what tracks your attending etc... (the one of the rx7 in my flickr was with the 28-135, was cropped a lot tho)

Look at my flickr as there's quite a few in there taken with it :)

Thank you very much for this. I really like your pic of the RX7 and seeing as you have used this lens and rate it quite well, I think I am now sold on it  Your bit about the lens not being quite long enough for motorsport, I dont feel this is a problem as I mainly have the 70-200 to hand and it's rallying I normally photograph so I am quite close to the action...scarily close sometimes  I would like the lens to be a walkabout lens as well so I dont want it to be too bulky. Either way, thank you for your feedback. Much appreciated.

Hi Claire

I've had the 28-135IS and really liked it, for me was a nice walkabout lens size and I got very nice results with it.

I have used it for motorsport and had no problems, I've attached a couple of photos my (then 14yr old) daughter took using it for her first try at motorsport with me...

I think she did a fantastic job and got some really good pictures with it, one thing she did find was towards the end of the day, it was getting a bit heavy for her (I took this as an excuse in advance in case her photos were no good ), but as I said, she was only 14 at the time.

Hope this is of some help...

I have the 28-135 and think it's a great lens. Nice and sharp, good colours...recommended. :)

Thank you everyone for your feedback. Great pics Andyred, you're daughter has done really well. I am liking the pics fair play.

Thanks, yes she seems to have an eye for certain shots - beginners luck obviously :)
