shifting to talk equipment, you'll get more replies there :)

Can you post some examples of of the images?

The 5d mk1 can't be adjusted on camera. Have you tried the lens on your 40d?

I've used the 24-70 on both the mk1 and 2 5d bodies and it really is a stunning lens

Take it back to jessops and tell them it's not good enough and you'd like a replacement. Soft lenses do come along and I actually had a soft 24-70 myself when I shot Canon. Just do some basic tests to make sure it definately is the lens and not you - mount it on a tripod, keep the ISO low, focus on the centre to start with etc etc.

When I first got my copy of this lens I was devistated to find it very soft.
I sent it to Canon CPS and they set it up with my 1Ds mkII now it is perfect, the funny thing is that it is perfect on other bodies too.

get it calibrated then you will know the dream, it's a GREAT lens

A lot of that softness can be due to bad focusing with this lens. 30D had a really hard job with it between 24-35mm, was really hit and miss. 5D mk1 is very similar camera, except for FF sensor. Now with 40D wideangle accuracy has gone up to good. Does yours give good results on 40D, except slight softness at 70mm? 35-50mm should be really 100% perfect.

I am rather concerned as 5D mk1 is my next purchase. If so will Canon 1D mk2 or 1Ds mk2 (if I get VERY LUCKY) be a better option?
