Predictably a fantastic lens, very fast focusing and excellent CA handling.

This shot is straight out of the Canon 5D and is 100% and full size (7MB) to show how well it's handled CA and also how sharp it resolves at.

Will post some more examples soon.

:)

I have been looking at that lens and the 24-105 f4, not sure which one I should tell my wife I really *need*. What do you intend to shoot with it.

perhaps something with a bit more colour, maybe a landscape might show it off better.

I only shoot studio. I only bought it for a wedding I'm doing for a friend in a few weeks and then I won't need it anymore as I only need primes. Being brand new with warranty...someone's going to get a bargain ;)

If it were between the 24-70 and the 24-105 I'd always go for the 24-70. The larger aperture is so useful for this focal range indoors and the image stabilisation never really benefited me that much on the 105.

Both very good lenses though and you will pay more for the 24-70L.

be very interested to see a few colour / portraits shots with the 24-70.

Its on the list to get, probably rent one for the day in London before forking out the best part of a grand. That said, be good to see some examples.

The lens is excellent, but I can't agree with excellent CA handling. My 24-70L in extreme back lit situations will be real bad. I was quite worried that the lens I bought was damaged or something. After short reading online it turns out that many other people have the same thing. Apparently it is normal. :)

edit - some pictures taken with 24-70L

This lens has been on my wish list for a little while now {Que. → dreamy face}.

I think I was unlucky with my 24-70 which had issues with focussing. So, I replaced it with the 24-105 f4 - and have never looked back. Yes - it is always nice to be able to access bigger apertures (natural light and portraiture etc...) - but at the end of the day I wanted a lens I could trust rather than a hit-and-miss scenario. Folk here are right - these lenses at noted to have varying quality - and I wish I had been lucky with my sample! To be honest, I had expected Canon to issue a newer version of this lens by now - possibly with IS, but there doesnt seem to be any sign of it!

The newer version has been announced and it's on it's way. No IS though.

Yes! Just realised today that the Mk II can be preordered... I expect this to be a very good lens - it seems to have had a total re design. Looking forward to user reviews on TP... :-)

Nice lens and from where I am in Ireland probably a better investment than property

Would be interesting to compare it to the older 28-70mm f2.8 L which it replaced. I've heard conflicting reviews, some say its sharper in the corners than the 24-70 but more prone to aberrations?

Yup. Pretty darned good lens Ashly. Quite the perfect zoom for events on a FF.

:} pleased to hear that! This lens is exactly what I need.

a great lens and its sharp wide open, great workhorse

and

iv owned 3 24-70 2.8L's and all 3 wasn't as sharp as i would have liked.

I cannot help but wonder if some of that may have been down to the 1000D also  at least I hope it was since I've one on order

I love the 24-70, always gives me sharp contrasty shots even wide open. And personally I like the weight and build, it's reassuring :)
