Probably a much asked or discussed question. But I am in the process of upgrading my Sigma 24-70 2.8 to one of the above.

My initial feeling is to go with the 24-70 due to f2.8 vs the 24-105 which is f4.

I mainly photograph children and families and I do work quite a bit on the 2.8 range.

Any advise or views would be most welcomed.

If you need 2.8 then get the 2.8. If not then the 24-105 has better range and IS. Image quality from my experience is much the same.

I really don't understand the dilema.. if you need 2.8 then get 2.8 not f4.. f4 + IS is no substitution..

Plus one

I think you answered your own question in your initial post.

Why are you thinking of changing your current 2.8 lens ?

Thanks for your responses. I was debating with myself if I would be happy with f4 to get the larger range or if f2.8 was more important than cost and range.

I was also wanting some comparison on quality if someone had tried both but after reading up on it and also after getting some feedback else where I believe the 24-70 which was the initial lens I was after is the way to go. It is such a large investment that I had to make sure I made the right decision. Thanks for your input and also thanks for pointing out the obvious.

why not 24-105mm and get 50/1.4 and 85/1.8 as the main workhorses?

that's a very interesting proposition.

I personally have the 24-70 2.8 and the other two above, and lately for commercial portraits i've shot using the 85mm exclusively and shot between f2 and f2.2. I honestly think f4 is just too small an aperture to shoot meaningful portraits in difficult lighting conditions.
