Hi

Looking at getting this for my walkabout lens.

Cameras it would be used on our the 7D and 40D so both got crop factor obviously. What are peoples recommendations?

Some say it won't be as good for walkabout due to the crop factor.

My other lenses:

90mm Macro
50mm 1.8
100-400mm
10-20mm

Thanks in advance,

Luke

Friend of mine uses one on his 7D and loves it. It's a very good lens, the only downside is that 24mm isn't very wide at all on a crop but then you have the 10-22 to cover that (he has the 10-22).

If you don't mind having to swap lenses when you need a wide shot, I'd say go for it.

I've got a 24-105 and a 100-400.
To be honest I rarely find myself looking for wider than 24mm, but given you have the 10-20 as well its even less of an issue.
I really like the 24-105 as a walkabout

24-105 is a great walk around lens even on a cropped body

It's a great lens and very versatile and the lens I use for the majority of the time only 50d. I do have a 10-22 to back it up but rarely use it due to focal length. I more use it when I decide I need very wide.
I'd recommend the 24-105.

I've also got a 24-105 and a 100-400 coming tomorrow.
Like everyone else has saidn the 24-105 it's a cracking lens for the money.
Combined with a 10-22 and it's a good combintaion.

On a crop body, I would say its going to be a bit tight when u want to shoot some wide angle pics. But I see that u got the 10-20 range covered, so this might be good. And u can keep it when u want to jump to the full frame world!

The only problem I find with this combination is if you are around the crossover point you end up swapping lenses a bit. Ideally a 70-200 as well would be perfect, but I think thats just me being greedy :)

24-105L is brilliant on full frame, but 17-55 is better on a cropper IMHO.

You gain much more on the wide end for general walkabout, and you get an extra stop with f/2.8.

I also use the 24-105L with the 7D and find it a great general purpose lens.

No don't bother with the 5d or 1d. Just get the 17-55 for your 7d/40d which will be by far the best option.

Great question Luke!

I have the last three lenses on your list (which I use with my 450d) so have the same gap in focal length, and not sure what to buy. Following this with interest.

i had a 24-105 for a week lol - the reach was really nice on a crop (i never go as low as 24 so wide end like 17-55 is uesless for me) and being able to go to 105 without changing lenses was definately nice

i swapped it for a 24-70 which i prefer the pictures just seem to be much sharper out the end

Weirdly, when I had the kit lens I found that 55 was too short, so was often swapping to my 70-200

I picked up the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS last weekend and went to London on a college trip yesterday and I really stretched it's legs. I agree that 24mm wouldn't be wide enough. I thought it would be (I was considering the 24-105mm too) but having shot with the 17-55mm for a day in the tight confines of London I can honestly say I loved having the wide angle. Shots of my friends on the tube, for example, would have been impossible on a longer (and slower) lens. I was also getting acceptably sharp shots hand held at night time in just street lamps, which blew me away. It's also damn sharp.

I have the 10-22 and the 24-105 but found that 24mm wasn't wide enough on a crop sensor so was forever changing lenses, which became quite annoying. I still have them both but they rarely, if ever, get used as I also now have the 15-85 which for me is a great walkaround lens.

I still think that on a crop sensor body, one should go for the 17-55/15-85/18-200. Those are good lenses and its versatile.

True, but the 17-55 and 15-85 are a cut above the 18-200 in terms of IQ I think.

The 18-200 also lacks USM. Whilst far from a necessity, once you've become used to USM lenses it's hard to live without it again IMO.

I have to agree in that. The usm

Motor is so smooth and once u have use it, there's no turning back! Anyways, the 18-200 offers great versatility but not so great in image quality. I'd settle with the 15-85 if I needed more range either wide or Tele.

*pls forgive me I'm typing on my Android and I keep on accidentally push the send button..sigh*

The 18-135 IS is also a very very good lens, and its non USM focusing is still very fast.

Apart from a little (correctable) barrel distortion at 18mm the IQ is very good indeed, better than the 18-200, its sharp and renders colours beautifully.

Due to funds i reckon i might go with 15-85 3.5-5.6. Is this the one you guys are talking about?

Thanks for all help so far.

Luke

Yes that's the lens. But if u want a cheaper alternative, the 17-85 is very cheap nowadays.

I can't vouch for the 24-105mm on a crop sensor as I've never tried it on one but I can only imagine it being a bit too narrow at the low end if it was going to be my main lens. Looking at your current lens setup though, it may fit in well with what you've already got. For full frame then this lens is an absolute must, that's a whole other ball game however. You may be best going to a camera shop and trying the lens out to see whether it's a worthwhile investment.

The 15-85 is a bit better iq wise than the 24-105 on a crop IMHO. I did a test with my mates.
