I've never ventured into the movie mode of my 1Dmk4, but decided to give it a try. There seems to be very little on the web other than tutorials about how to use it, but not much discussion. Has anyone given it a go for sport? Have you got any hints or tips? I shot a 18 sec players coming onto the field that made a 58mb clip, which zenfolio seems to have compressed for web view.

I read on the net that "Battery Life. The 2,300 mAh LP-E4 battery is rated by Canon to produce between 1,200-1,500 shots in regular use, or 230-270 when using Live View. For video, Canon doesn't state a maximum lifespan. In our testing, we were able to shoot 157 minutes and 43 seconds of 1920x1080, 30fps video (in 6 separate clips) before the battery died. "

I've never used the live view option for shooting, but the video option instructions seemed to suggest using it. So battery life will be somewhat shorter if using it for extended periods!!
I'm a numpty when it comes to movies, and this was hand held, but I was impressed with the quality of the shot and the microphone picking up the background. Any comments? If I'm going to try to get better, I feel I need some help!

I'd suggest diving into the Talk Video forum rather than asking here tbh! :D

Mods - can you move this to the Talk Video forum? Thanks.

Yhe trouble wiht the m kIV an dindeed the newer 1dx as far as i can see is no zoom+focus.. which makes it pretty usless IMHO .. OK to pojt at a boxing rindg maybe.. but you cant follow a field player around a pitch as focus would lose...... seems stupid on a 5k camera (1dx) not to be able to zxoom and focus :(

Focussing is much more forgiving on video than it is in stills, doing it manually isn't as hard as one might think!

Do you mean zoom and focus at the same time? manually? ie twist zoom ring and twist focus ring? and it not look orrible on the video?

Zooming on video is a bit "amateur" anyway.. you'll notice a distinct lack of it in pretty much all TV and film! Except You've Been Framed, naturally :)

Well I am going to give video with the 1dx a go tonight.. not much difference than the mkIV for general stuff..

I will only be in one posiiton so will need to zoom in if required for the right shots...

Going to be testing at ice hockey training 10pm tonight ... so not the best lights.....

What I ahve learnt is...
Manual control
f2.8
iso as req
shutter speed double frame rate
IS always on
film as IPB
shoot flat..set all colour bright ect to 0 and thenrreset in software

sound right?

I'd set a K value for White Balance if poss, or take a manual one. I'd go a bit tighter than f/2.8 if possible to allow for movement variance - the ISO in video is very forgiving.

I'm not too sure about shooting it flat either. You want to get it as close as you can in camera because editing in post can be a real PITA at times.

re flat..was a video I watched... yeagh maybe not go too far first night.. i only have windows video software :)

does video ignore the write to multiple cards?

Yup. Safest way to make sure you get it right is to only use one slot whilst videoing.

I've ended up with different takes spread across two cards in the past. F*** knows how I managed that!

well that was interesting...

high up at the back of the stands loking down on the rink and action..

70-200 was just stupid.. no point zooming in theres no way i could keep focus with fast moving hockey players on ice :(

17-40 and just panning left to right was better but you could do that wiht a phone :(

have no idea how to cust video for the bits I want.. need to sort that tomorrow..

Believe it or not, that's the way a TV news cameraman works - 2 rings, focus and aperture and a rocker switch for zoom.
