Yes
Just a quick question for you sports photographers who may have used both cameras.
Is it worth upgrading from a 7D to a 1D mk3, for an amateur like myself.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Faster, more accurate, proper weather sealing. A 1D is a beautiful thing. And girls will find you more attractive.

I had a 7D v 1D3 thread a while back where I asked a similar question (more wildlife than sport) as I was going to change my 1D2 for either a 7D or 1D3.

I put it off for a while but I'm about to go for one or the other so will watch this thread with interest.

Cheers Tobers, I know the A/F is better on the 1D and the IQ is better but can spending in the region of £1100 for a 2nd hand unit be justified for an amateur like me. Will the difference in performance & image quality be that massive a difference.
I like the idea of being more attractive to the opposite sex but not too sure if the missus would be happy about that.

1d3.

Despite the difference in crop and resolutions i always use the 1d in preference to the 7d.

Ontop of which i really hate the 7d images over ISO800 - noise starts to creep in so you can't even use the superior resolution it offers.

The other main advantage of a 1d is that it is tough - if you have to use the camera where it is likely to take a knock then you don't have to worry about it so much (i don't abuse my kit - but it does get used). The 7d feels very fragile in comparison.

When I bought my 1DIV I kept my 1DIII as a backup as I've never had any issues with it and they are very similar in a few ways, same battery etc. I recently had a shot of a 7D for a few hours and I can now say I wouldn't swap it for my 1DIII. The whole speed and image quality is far superior on the 1D. It may be that the 7D I had was a poor copy and there are poor 1DIII copies around but I would buy a good used 1DIII before a 7D.

I'd have to disagree with you on that. The 7D sensor's noise performance handles very well indeed, up to 6400 in fact!

Whilst the 1D is undeniably the better camera, will you, as an amatuer, be best off spending £1000 on a better body than putting the money towards lenses.

What lenses do you have, your list only states the 70-200. will a 300mm f4 be more advantageous for motorsport or a wide angle for 'street' type sports?

Mike

I used to have 1d2 a while ago. brilliant camera but rubbish ergonomics. I also needed more megapixels and microadjustment. I sold 1D2 and bought 7D.
7D is a nice camera, but once you've tried 1D series, thats it! I'm now thinking about selling my 7D and getting 1D3. I think it's a good idea to rent a body first and compare. I'm going to do it soon:)

If you want to save money buy a 1dii, still outperforms a 7d in low light, and available for half the price

Perhaps we have different expectations of 6400.

Personally i'm pretty disappointed with the 7d. I preferred the low ISO performance on the 50d. Admittedly above 1250 the 7d is superior to the 50d. But i find the 7d noisy at ISO's i wouldn't expect it to present at all. Hence why i go for the camera that is 2 years older but i prefer the images from.

Are you sure you aren't imagining it? Because I have 0% noise at anything lower than 1000 :p

Compared to?

Would certainly like to see a sample at 100% of ISO800

Mike

I have the following lenses
Canon L 70-200mm f2.8 Non IS
Canon L 17-40mm f4 USM
Canon 50mm f1.8 MkII
Sigma DG Macro 105mm f2.8
Canon 1.4 TC

My main sport is football, but would like to try rugby and motor cross.

Will also have a look at renting a 1D if available to see for my self.

Noise is acceptable if not great when run through noiseware pro. The following example at ISO6400

Once you go 1 series you will never go back. When I had one of mine stolen my wife asked if I wanted something like a 7D. My response: I wouldn't P*ss on a 7d if it was on fire.
Accept no substitute.

If you come down to Somerley Park Horse Trials on either the 28th or 29th (July) you can have a go on my back up for a day if you want.

Mark, that is a very generous offer. I will let you know asap if I am available on any of those dates.
There is a 1D MkIII for sale for £1000 on the classified section. Estimated shutter count 35K and the AF has been rectified. Should really bite the sellers hand off.
If I were to buy it, would the offer of shooting at Somerley Park still be open as it would be nice to put a face to a name.

I would suggest you put a wanted request in the classifieds.

Well, I have just sent payment for a 1D MkIII I have bought off of TP classifieds. Might need to put a 7D badge on it to fool the missus.

Perhaps the context is all important. For me shooting non league, step 6, with crap floodlights I could get nothing printable after 4pm between November and February with a 7d plus 80-200mm f2.8 I had absolutely no chance for midweek games. Swapping to the 1d2 improved things somewhat. However this season with a d3 I am more hopeful.

How is the new camera then? How do you find it compared to your 7D?

Camera received as described. Not fully put it through its paces yet as I have been customising it to death. Auto ISO would have been nice as it is a feature that I use on the 7D, but early indications are the 1D is going to be significantly better than the 7D in AF, IQ & high ISO. :)

Helpful comments for me.

Just got 1d3. I'm still to test it with long telephoto lens but initial tests are very promising.

Have a look in this album - all with a Mk3 and a 20 year old 300/2.8

And one from the album - titled

'White boys can't run'

very keen on the 7D as an upgrade from my 40D.
mate of mine got a 1Diii instead of a 7D and still wonders about it but looks like the 1Diii blows it socks away
Still think the 7D will do for me as a happy snapper

Took the 1D out today for its 1st serious test. The picture below was practically the 1st shot of the day, and it was a heavy crop. 70-200mm non IS lens with 1.4 TC.

Im currently thinking of making a similar move, have a 40d presently but was considering either upgrading to a 1D mkii and save some money for glass or spending the extra on the mkiii for its better ISO performance, battery life and menus. Just a little worried about the focusing issues of earlier Mk3s, but very impressed with images posted on this thread from the mk3. Hope you enjoy your new 1D sgt Bilko99

The one I bought was within the affected serial No range but was repaired FOC by Canon and the seller included the repair note from Canon to prove it. Not had an issue yet with AF.

Thats good news, i am definitely favoring the idea of spending the extra on the mk3 now, as the better ISO performance would be very useful to me.

I made the move last year from 7D to 1DIII. I was disappointed with the image quality of the 7D but the 1DIII images blew me away. It was also extremely good at focussing in low light situations. I disliked the 10mp resolution and I sometimes use video so the perfect camera for me would be the 1D4 but don't under estimate the 1DIII

I have 2 1DIIIs. On 'in range' and one out.

The 'in range' one had been to Canon for the fix and was just as good as the one out of range.

I have a 1d mk2 and was shooting surf in the maldives with a that and a 7d with a 300 f4 and wasn't particularly impressed with it. Big files are nice but decent focus and noise control are worth so much more. Images from 1d mk2 i have printed a2 without a problem so dont really need any more MP's.

I shoot with both a 40D and 1D2

At the risk of chucking a spanner in the works - the 1D2 obviously knocks spots off the 40D when it comes to AF but I still maintain that (providing you catch the shot) the 40D gives better results and images certainly crop better.

I'll only reach for my 1D2 if I think the Af on the 40D will see me miss shots.
