hello everyone,i am looking to get a new/secondhand body to sit with my ancient mk3!i am thinking of either a 1dx or 5dmk4.i would love to hear your thoughts/experiences of these bodies.i mainly shoot wildlife and occasionaly landscapes.many thanks in advance.

I went from a 1D mk4 to a 1Dx and was very happy. If you're used to the size and weight of the 1D mk3 then you too will be happy. No experience of the 5D Mk4 but I suppose the main difference would be in AF and frame rate, could be wrong though, worth checking specs. I've now gone Sony, couldn't handle the weight or shutter noise of the 1Dx any more!

5d mk4 because if you don't specifically want or need a 1D series then don't get one full stop

I loved my 1D3 had four bodies over the years ,the mk4 is also good but like all these things unless you have bottomless pockets for the latest up to date cameras and lenses .the main thing is 1D3/4 1DX are now old and if you have a problem your faced with a uneconomical repair . There is also the weight factor to take into account .i took the bold step that due to advancing years if I wanted to carry with the hobby drastic action was needed ,so I have invested in a Panasonic g80 and a pano/Leica 100-400 and 12-60 lenses and after two months it’s starting to fall into place the all up weight is around 1.5kg and the I.q is up with the best of them

1dz2 gets my vote.

I thought you were disappointed with yours and don't think very highly of it. That's the impression I got anyway

There is some truth in that but, the op is familiar with 1d cameras and shoots wildlife. I makes sense (to me) to effectively upgrade.

H,do you use ext's? what lenses do you use for wildlife? what types of willdlife do you like to make images of? I want to upgrade form the 1Div but have little other real world experience to draw on bar scrubbling about making images of said beasties. I think with these two cameras you have chosen, which I have read about fairly extensively,(BUT NOT USED !!), all these little facets are going to effect what is best for your personal needs.

1dX 5Div are very close and tricky to separate for me personally, i'd be looking at things like the f8 limit on FP's speed of AF, low light performance. Ha ha not having a light up red FP on the 1Dx like i have on my 1Div is a silly stumbling block for me:rolleyes:

My humble advice would be try to tailor the new body to what you specifically do as closely as possible. You have made no mention of weight and one series being an issue so,you will have a natural affinity with those bodies if that was your chosen path as a plus.

Mate a couple of real world examples to try and illustrate me thinking:) :if you shoot mainly BIF i'd lean towards 1DX if shoot say more static images say genuinely wild deer, the the extra pixels on subject and larger FP array might sway you towards the 5div

I can't really advise you here, bar muse some of the thoughts running through my head, as I'm musing a similar upgrade.............they are simply tools and you need the right tool for you,not me or anyone else. To me grabbing that right tool is down to you analysing your needs

good luck

Just my 2p!

I have tried the 5D4 and very nice it is too. However the 1DX is (was) my choice by a considerable margin for my bird/wildlife uses. Were my photography priorities reversed then I would favour the 5D4.

The main reason is the AF performance of the 1DX which is excellent, especially with the larger lenses. Your 1D3 batteries will still work too.
