Hi guys.
Currently I use a canon 1D mk11n and 20D. I'm looking to get a Canon 1d mk111, but with problems reported in the past and one on here by KIPAX I'm rather weary. I realize that these problems maybe isolated and perhaps many satisfied users. Are there satisfied users out there, if so, when did you get your body. OR anyone changed form canon to nikon D3.

I don't shoot sports. I do some studio work (where I need to increase files to 35mb tiffs). Mostly I shoot press work, missing that important moment due to err99 would not be good.

What are your thoughts and experiences. I've checked the Nikon forums and can't see much reported problems.

thanks in advance.

Got mine at the beginning of July, up to around 15,000 shots and not had a single problem.

i've had mine since april i think. 20k plus shots and it's never missed a beat. i'd have another tomorrow if i needed 2 bodies the same.

rumours of a mkIV so mkIII prices may be on a drop in the future.

Thanks for your help, Pxl8 and nowler.

Jimmy:-
I'm aware there will be a new model, rumored for March, which will probably have better ISO performance than the Nikon D3. Ideally I need something sooner than that. I will keep it in mind though.

I have a 1D3 which I bought from Calumet as an xmas pressie to myself last year. It hasn't missed a single beat since I bought it and I've used it intensively for lots of sport work as well as all sorts of other photography. Absolutely sensational camera.

The D3 is pretty cool as well, but if you are into Canon lenses already you'll have to pay a lot to switch.

Thanks Tobers. I've just had a look at your website. Very good I like your style. I can also see the type of uses you've used the mk111 for.

Or you could opt for a 1Ds MKII?

50mb uncompressed TIFFS right out the box and no reliability issues that I've heard of. Can pick one up for £2K that should keep you going for a while?

Just thought I'd throw that one in :)

Just a thought, but the new 50D produces Tiff files well in excess of 40mb straight out of the camera.

Ideally the 1.3 crop suits most of my applications, so the 50D, while a consideration is off the list. Although, thinking about it. I may give it a look. Generally if I use two bodies the long lens could go on the larger crop. Hmm.

CT:- I have thought about the 1ds, which would just be overkill for the moment, plus I need a fast frame rate for most of my work. It is an option I may also consider.

What about the new 5D Mk2? Rather than the Mk3!

I love my MK3 and I do get some OOF shots but put most of that down to me!

Also, do you really want to sell all your Canon gear to replace with Nikon!

Seems a very expensive exercise which won't guarentee you anything other than an empty wallet!

There are many issues with the Nikon D3 and I talk with a guy who has been photographing for years and years, has bought a D3 and is struggling! It does seem that the flagship Canon/Nikon cameras do have their own flaws!

Just my .02p worth!
Carl.

All fair comment, but there's no doubt that with the 50D and now the 5D Mk2 there are some pretty good choices in the Canon range for quality images without necessarily going for a 1 Series body. If you really need the weather proofing or the frame rate of the 1 Series then of course it's a different matter.

It's a difficult call on the 1DMk3 with a new version probably in the offing around March time, which I'd expect to get twin Digic 1V processors and around 15 mega pixels to bring it in line with the 50D?

Got my Canon 1D Mk111 two weeks ago and so far I've taken nearly 1000 shots. It's an awesome bit of kit and most of the controls are second nature moving from a 30D.

The layout of the controls is intuitive and the viewfinder display is fantastic. ISO upto 1250 appears to be very clean so far. I'm blown away.

Thanks for your help everyone. I stuck with the canon and got the 1d mk111, so far I'm impressed with it.

I'll soon be selling my 20D and bits for that.
