Ok so here goes... been meaning to post this for a while now.

I currently have a Canon 1D Mk1 - I got this on a great deal when I upgraded from my second dslr - the 350d. Since then I have also upgraded my glass through various stages to now having the 24-105 f4.

My uses for the camera are as follows:
1) Private hobby use. I am by no means a huge user of my 1D as a hobby photographer - I use it about once a week or when the moment takes me. I seem to be more of a 'capture the moment' snapper rather than a set up shot kind of guy.

2) Work use - My reason for getting the 1d was because of its high frame rate performance and fast AF - I work for an engineering company and need to capture high speed components. More for scientific evaluation rather than for advertising shots (although some are used for latter). We also have a studio at work with lights and backdrop. I love playing in there and it is where I sometimes let the work use and hobby combine.

The Question for all you clever peeps
At present my 1D is the mutts in the studio. At ISO 100 its a Dream!
BUT - when using it with a flash on our products and for general usage the ISO noise at 320 and above is horrendous! I think this is what holds me back slightly from togging more for a hobby - I get all enthusiastic about taking shots out and about... get them home... take one look and sigh :(
A few times this week I would have loved to grab the camera and head off into town and capture some festive stuff.... but I know the shot is going to be messier with ISO dust than me on new years morning. Also - the 4.5mpix really limits use - I cant crop without getting frustrated!

I dont have much money to chuck about on a new body and I know I need the 1D for work use - particularly for its weatherproofing.

Is it worth in your valued opinion going for the Mk2 for its slightly better ISO performance? I think this would be about all I could stretch to money wise.

Oh and asking the company to fork out on any new body is a nono - I am the only one there who has a (small) clue about photography - they only buy cameras that all can use and they do pay me to cover the togging costs as well as to work there marketing.

As always guys and gals thanks for your opinions. I really appreciate them and your time.

:)

Slightly better ISO performance, youre kidding right, the MK2 is a totally different ballgame as far as noise goes, very, very useable at ISO 1600.

Sorry - that was meant to read as sarcastic! But totally agree - the 320 or lower iso on the 1dmk1 is sooooo limiting! I see your in a different ballpark with the mk3.... ah one can dream!

The MkII should be quite a step up, not only in high-ISO performance, but in general handling, too.
