Whilst i am shooting every now and then a star appears on the left hand side of the viewfinder and the aperture changes from lets say f4 to f13 and my exposures are totally black.
I am not changing anything in the camera at all .
does anyone know which setting or what is causing this.

I'm guessing you've hit the AE lock button by mistake. This is easily done when rotating the body from landscape to portrait position.

Done it myself

i dont think i have caught anything by accident and i have been checking my settings and most are disabled.
There must be something i am missing.

If you press the AE button the star will appear in the bottom left of the screen. The star only shows when the button is pressed.

The first time it happened to me it was the strap that slid over the button.

This has happened to me a few times but only when using flash and I never hit any other button at the time and the exposure is all over the place, I think in the two years of having the MKIV it's done it about 3 times.

The problem is that i didnt catch the button and it kept happening all day.

Its probably the palm of your hand hitting the ae lock button on the vertical grip.

if you dont use the AF ON button for back button focus you could try setting custom function C.FnIV-2 to 1 which moves the AE lock to the AF ON button and vice versa. Then see if it continues to happen.
