Good luck finding any stock at Jessops, out of 20 stores in a 60mile radius 0 stock.

Dont think there in stock anywhere in the UK at Jessops. Tried a numver of post codes around england and there all out of stock.

Makes me a very difficult decision between this and the 5D2.

Not really, they are designed for different things.

5D2 = Landscapes
1Dmk3 = sports and other fast moving activities
Very generally speaking of course.

Yes but when your main subjects are live music, portraits and extreme sports photography you can see the trade off I would make on each. Anyway not got enough cash saved yet. Sure some will get this bargain though

I have a 5D2 and a 1D3. IMHO the 5D2 is a mediocre body with rather weak AF that houses a rather nice sensor. In terms of performance as an all round camera the 1D3 completely owns the 5D2. It is a gorgeous camera to use. The 5D2, by comparison, is a right old clunker. The viewfinder blackout time seems huge and the mirror feels like it takes forever to do its thing. Of course, very fine images are possible, and you can push the thing to do things it wasn't really intended for, like sports, if you are lucky. It's strengths come in ultimate IQ, but it is quite lethargic, compared to a 1D3 or even a 7D, heck, even a 40D. Good IQ is all well and good, but if the AF can't keep up and the shutter lag or low frame rate misses the critical moment it isn't much use.

When the 5D2 was announced it didn't take long for me to put in an order. As I read reviews and user reports I changed my mind and ordered the 1D3 instead. I have no regrets about the choice I made. I only recently bought the 5D2 and the main reason as to improve my wide angle coverage. The 5D2 unquestionably has its strengths, but the 1D3 is a true pro camera and an accomplished all rounder.

Live music = 1D3. Extreme sports = 1D3. Portraits = 5D2, but the 1D3 is no slouch there either. It has beautiful IQ and will walk over any of the APS-C cameras for smooth IQ and better DOF control.

At the price now available the only downside to the 1D3 is that it is big and heavy. Sometimes that is a good thing. At other times it can be a pain. When I looked at the specs for the 1D4 (and the price!) I quickly lost interest. The 1D3 suits me well enough and will continue to for a long time to come.

Of course, if you want video (I don't) then the 5D2 pretty much has it, although you might look at the 7D, seriously. I have one of those too.

EDIT : I've started trying out my 5D2 for BIF photography, and it is not doing a bad job at all. The centre point AF, with expansion points, is delivering decent results. Sure, the frame rate is still slow, but I am having a change of heart about the (centre point) AF performance.

I pretty much agree having had all three too and preferring the 1D3 I thought I would never change it as I found it better at most things than either the 5D2 or the 7D although there were features on both that I would have liked on the 1D3 (bigger sensor and resolution of the 5D2, level control, 1.6x crop of the 7D) I have no interest whatsoever in video.

The only reason I changed was the opportunity to change my 1D3 for a mint 1Ds3 which addressed 2 of the issues although it would be nicer to have slightly better very high ISO on the 1Ds3 it does pretty much everything I need. The only downside for me is that to get any real length would require the use of more expensive lenses.

I have to say that after prolonged use of a pro body I cannot see me ever going back to a non-pro version as even with a grip attached they just do not feel the same or have the same ergonomics!

I know im absolutely no-where near a Pro, but i agree with that statement. Ergonomics and usability (albeit at a high cost) beat the others hands down in my opinion. Even if it is a great big lump!
