Canon 18-55 IS

Hello chaps, I have some money to spend and am considering whether to change from my Canon 18-55 3.5-5.6 II, to the IS version of the same lens as a general walkabout lens.

I am currently doing a Digital Camera acquaint course run by a local camera course, and learning all the functions of my Canon 400D.

I have allso found that my Sigma 75-300 is not chipped correctly for my Canon, takes most shots but occasionally get Err99 code. Doesn't bother me as i can retake the shot, using trial and error I'm sorting out which settings give the fault before I decide to change that lens also.

Depends on budget really and what do you aim to get from the IS version of the same lens, what problems are you having with your 18-55 lens. I haven't had any personal experience, but I have heard the IS version is the better of the 2 lenses.

With regard to your Sigma lens, the Canon 55-250IS lens is a cracker and reasonably priced, think buyacamera were doing it at £160 the other day. For a healthier budget, the Canon 70-300IS lens is well worth a look, esp if your wanting to keep the focal length you already have with your Sigma.

The problem with the old Sigma is that it does not work on Digital Bodies EXCEPT at the widest aperture (i.e f5.6 at 300mm)

The only way to make sure it will not give you ERR99 is to use it either at AV or at M and keep the aperture locked at the widest setting.

Regarding the 18-55IS I would save a bit more and get a better lens later.

Thanks Chaps. I had money from Pa-in-law for Xmas so am wondering what to do with it, photo gear or DIY.
I am getting to grips with the 75-300 just now sure whether I will use it enough, I thought the IS lens were the bees knees.

Might talk to the people running the course.

I have attached a pic I took in Holland last year, is the lens OK.
I think it was set on Auto, but I'll have a look as I now know what to look for.
