I'm getting married later this year and am looking for a cheap walkabout lens to chuck on my 40D and take on the stag weekend and honeymoon that will have a bit more reach than the 18-55 kit lens. I want to try and keep to only taking a single lens but would also like to come back with some reasonable holiday snaps if poss!
How does the image quality of the EF-s 18-135 IS compare to the 18-55 (non IS) kit lens?
Can anyone recommend anything better around the £220 mark?

Thanks Guys:thumbs:

I use the 18-135mm lens on my 60D and find it quite good.

Prefer it sometimes for the range rather than swapping lens.

Can't compare it to the non IS 18-55mm lens but it is on a par to the IS one.

Don't think I'd take it on a stag do though, that's what compacts are for.

In fact, camera, stag do, maybe a bad idea alltogether. :D

I agree, make sure it's insured if you take it!

I tried the 18-135 lens for a while before upgraded. It's a good all-rounder for the price.

Don't know how it'd compare IQ wise but the Sigma 18-200mm would give you a little more range and they can be picked up fairly cheaply 2nd hand :)

I did consider that one as the extra reach could be useful but some of the reviews I read have put me off.

I've got this lens on my 40d and used it a lot, from shooting grid girls to travelling as far afield as mexico and had some cracking results. IMHO any wide angle to zoom is going to be a bit of a compromise somewhere in the range but this is a great lens. I was considering the canon 18-200 at the time but I now have a more dedicated zoom lens so as a walkabout this is fine. I'd also consider the 15-85 if you can live with the less zoom and more money..

Its a great lens.

Ignore the early reviews. I have a lot of very good and highly regarded lenses and the Canon 18-135 is up there with the best of them.

As a walkabout, its flexible, sharp, has brilliant IS and great colour rendition. I use mine as a landscape lens also, its that sharp and gives lovely images.

Great, thanks guys. Looks like the 18-135 will suit my needs then. Now I've just got to decide where to buy it!!

Well, I took the plunge and ordered the 18-135 which arrived yesterday!:D
Have had a very quick play with it at work today, snapped these on my colleagues window-sill

Am very pleased so far, looks like it will suit my needs nicely.:)

Nice pics. I nearly got one of these when I ordered my 550D last night, but decided on a combination of the 18-55mm IS and the 55-250mm IS, mainly for the added length. Looks like it takes nice pics though, could definitely be a future purchase as a single walkabout lens.

I had the 18-55mm & the 55-250mm.

In the end I decided to get rid of the 18-55mm and get the 18-135mm as I prefer the extra range.

Now I only have to switch to the 250mm when I need the extra length.
