I'm shopping again :D With my 21st birthday in September, I'm thinking about asking for money to go towards upgrading my 350D body and 18-55mm kit lens. I can't stand the 18-55, have never got on with it.

Other lenses include the Sigma 10-20 and Sigma 70-200 2.8.

We have a bit of rivalry in the house, with my dad and brother also keen photographers. Dad seems to buy whatever I say I am thinking of buying- his latest edition being the Canon 17-85mm lens which he bought last week, about 2 weeks after I said it looked like quite a nice lens. Plus the above 2 Sigma lenses are now on his wish list, and he's always eager to nick the 10-20mm in particular!! ;)

Is this lens any good? I really like Sigma lenses, find them very well made and never had a problem with them, great value for money too. Have found the 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5, is this any good? Better than the Canon 17-85 or not?

Have also seen the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Macro, again within my budget, any thoughts on this lens?

I'd rather take the advice of you guys than anyone else, as many of you raved about the Sigma 10-20mm and rightly so, it's my new favourite lens :D

Any advice on what to replace 18-55mm with, it will eventually fit on a Canon 40D or 50D, depending on when I buy it

Cheers :)

someone answer the man! im keen to see peoples opinions on sigma 18-50 too ;)

I asked a similar question a few months ago, and eventually went for the 17-85 over some other options (including some sigmas, though not the ones you mention). I've not had a moment's regret about the Canon 17-85 - it's a fantastic lens for the money, and I've got some great stuff with it. I wasn't sure initially whether the IS would compensate for the relative slowness of it, but actually it's working well for what I'm doing with it, and the extra reach (85mm over 50/55mm) is coming in very handy.

Can't advise too much about the Sigmas, but I'm sure someone round here can.

obviously L glass it nice but I don't live in that world.
for merely lots of money the canon 17-55 IS is great, but pricey.
Have you looked at the 17-50 Tamron? f2.8 throughout and very well priced.

Tell your dad that the 17-85 IS is a horrible lens mostly that bows hugely at the wide end and he'll want to change it in a year or less :P
well I did...it looks great on paper but lets you down
not surprised you like the 10-20...it's a hugely popular lens

don't forget...if you're upgrading the body, then the new 18-55 IS kit lens is actually quite good apparently for general snapping

Cheers :) fontmoss, I'm not a guy!! I'm a girl :D

The Canon 17-55 IS is way out of my budget to be honest although looks a nice lens. Not heard much about Tamron lenses, are they any good? I've always stuck with Canon and Sigma...

I own a 17-85mm IS and while I find it a good outdoor lens, I find it can be slow, struggles indoors and with low light.
I actually prefer to use my 18-55mm IS indoors instead.
If I had known about the Sigma 17-70mm at the time, I would have probably opted for it over the canon.

I got my Sigma 17-70 from blueberry last week and its really really sharp it almost works for marco aswell but all together havnt used it enough to give you a full review.

All i can say is so far i like, i will eventually get L glass to replace it but in the meantime i can see it becoming my fav lens of the moment :D
