Canon 17-55mm Lens - Zoom Creep?

Just wondering if any other users of the Canon 17-55mm lens experience zoom creep?

I've had mine for just a couple weeks and very pleased with the results, very sharp, fast and quiet focus etc. The one minor irritant is after 5 to 10 minutes of walking with the camera suspended upside down from a BR strap, the lens zooms out - not a serious issue - but it is irritating.

Anyone one else have the same thing? I've seen a suggestion about using some kind of elastic band around the barrel to stop the slip, I'm a bit reluctant in case something gets jammed under the zoom mechanism.

Any comments & suggestions welcome.

Thanks,

Chris

I have exactly the same issue. It doesn't bother me that much as I just flick the zoom to where I want it when I pull it up to my eye to shoot anyway.

Thanks Jack, it seems to be a fairly common problem, but it is a bit irritating, especially when my wife's Tamron 17-50 doesn't suffer the same problem and it has a lock mechanism in case it ever develops a slidey zoom!

I am very disappointed with my one year old 17-55, but in terms of lens creep that is not a problem.

What is the cause of your disappointment? After just a couple of weeks ownership, I'm very pleased with mine.

I noticed it with the new one I bought last friday, between that and the weird focal length range I took it back yesterday for a refund. Took some fantastic photos though regardless.

Don't get many negative comments apart from price about this lens, i'm also interested what you found disappointing

Maybe he's confused it with an 18-55?!

The weird focal length range? You took a lens back due to it's focal range??!

Surely you were aware of the focal range when you bought it??

And it's a very standard focal length range..

I spend alot of time with my 10 - 22, seemed a bit pointless having the overlap really. Yes the 17 - 55 is a stop and a third faster at that point, so there was benifits but it just seemed a waste. Anyway I found that I was using between 35 - 55 most of the time. Makes more sense for me to get a 24 - 70...

Also why the hating. Its all opinion at the end of the day. Rockwell loves the 18 - 55 kit lens....

It is the 17-55 f2.8 lens I have rather than the 18-55 kit lens.

As for why I don't like it, there isn't really anything I can put my finger on except I almost always left feeling disappointed with the results I get from it. Perhaps the problem is more to do with me, as having read great reviews on it maybe I was just expecting too much from it.

No hating I just found it amusing!

We're talking about the very expensive 17-55 not the 18-55 tho!

Its a common problem with all canon non-L series zooms, just one of these things

Not really, loads of non L zooms don't suffer lens creep.
