Thinking of buying one of the above and would like some opinions on the differences between the two?

No expert, so please keep the answers simple! :)

Many thanks

The 16-35 MkII is supposed to be much much better than the MkI.

See the following review:

If you're looking at the MkI for budget reasons, you may be better of with the 17-40 f/4.0, which is cheaper and also reputedly optically better than the 16-35 MkI.

Except it's not 2.8.

Obviously that would be the trade-off: pay less and lose 1 stop of light. The other thing to know about the 17-40 f/4.0 is that it is very sharp in the center but gets quite a bit softer in the outer corners on a full-frame camera such as the 5D.

The 16 35 f/2.8 MkII is supposed to have more even sharpness across the frame. This is why I'm considering upgrading my 17-40 f/4.0 to the 16-35 MkII myself, but in my case I would not consider the 16 35 f/2.8 MkI.

I have and love the 16-35MKII - I wouldn't hesitate to use it wide open - it is very sharp from wide open onwards & has fantastic colour rendition. I use it as an ultra-wide on my 5D and a walkaround on my 50D.

The 17-40 makes a reasonable but not great walkaround IMHO on a crop but is a superb UWA on FF once stopped down a little - I didn't find mine all that great wide open. It's also much better at the wide end. If you are combining it with a another lens such as the 24-105 so you are mostly getting it for the 17-24mm then it is a good option.

I have had both and tbh the 16-35 is way better than the 17-40 when it comes to distortion, although the 17-40 is sharper the difference isn't really that noticable against my 16-35 Mk1, hence I sold the 17-40
If you can afford the Mk2 go for it imo, but if you can't the build quality of the mk1's was a little hit and miss, some were superb with others being pants, just make sure you get sample shots with it wide open.

Many thanks for taking the time to post the link to the images; it was both kind and very helpul.

Mk II it is! :thumbs::thumbs:
