Good evening!

My 10D has packed up, coming up with error 99. With the latest firmware, the problem is a lot better, but the shutter still jams every now and then and error 99 flashes up.

Does anyone know where the best place to buy camera spares? In this case I require a new shutter mechanism. I've looked around on the 'net and not come up with anything. Even the Canon website isn't much use, I can't even find a spare parts section at all - unless I'm not looking hard enough.

Cheers

Given that a used 10D goes for something like £120 to £150, you may want to assess how cost effective buying a new shutter would be (you seem to be implying that you will fit it yourself).

Are you positive it's the shutter? I remember mine "sticking" with an err code but it was the battery failing.

Thanks very much for the link. I'll contact them.

I am aware that the camera is getting on a bit now and it isn't worth a great deal of money these days. So, yes you are right, I do intend to perform the repairs myself, I feel more at ease doing that sort of thing myself rather than hand my equipment over to a person whom I have never even met and have them tinker with it and then charge me hundreds of pounds for the privilege. That will definitely not be cost effective.
Of course, I do need to asses the cost of the spare parts to weigh up whether or not it will be worth repairing at all.

I am certain the shutter is faulty, some of the slats have scratches on them and one of the slats is slightly distorted. The mirror is lifting, so that is not a problem. The shutter fails to open 20% of the time in landscape orientation and fails 60% of the time in portrait orientation.
If I lift the mirror manually and then fire the shutter, on the occasion that it does fail, I can see the shutter "jog" a little without actually opening and then the error 99 comes up.

I like your suggestion about the battery, I ordered a new one earlier this week because I know that the battery that I am using is not very good. The camera will not even allow me to lock the mirror up because it says that the battery is too low even when it has just come off the charger.
A new battery may well get the camera going again, the worst that can come from that is that I have a lot less misfires and I can also use the battery on my camcorder. However, with the state that the shutter is in, it will eventually fail completely not too long from now.
85,000 odd actuations is pretty good going, it would be cool to have the camera working again if it can be mended cost effectively.

Once again, thanks for your help.
