Canon 100mm tripod ring

Hi , i've just bought the L version of this macro lens , and was looking at getting the official Canon tripod ring , but the cost is staggering , then i noticed a third party one on sale at Amazon.....much cheaper , has anyone any experience with this , cheers.

Do you really need the ring at all? It's quite a light lens

I bought a cheapy to use as part of a macro-flash setup but went down a different path.

I can't see any other use for the ring.
