Hoping that some of you 100mm owners can give me a bit of advice :)

Thinking about buying this lens, what with the cashback deal going on, but have a few reservations;

Ideally, I'd like to use it for a bit of touchline sports photography as well, would it be suited to this? Which leads to a similar question of; Is the AF quick? I tried the Tamron 90mm and was really disappointed with it seeking slowly when not using it for just macro work.

It's an excellent lens for macro but the AF is slow, I think you will find most macro lenses are the same, it is better to use MF for macro work.
I don't think it would be much use for sport togging
It's not bad for portrait stuff though.

Sorry - but it would be DIRE for sports work - the AF is not only slow but often hunts before finding focus. I use mine on manual focus nearly all the time as I generally find it's quicker that way!!

For macro work though it's superb - sharp as a tack and a joy to use - these were taken using it if that helps any....

I agree with Scraggs.....I can't imagine using this for sports.
The AF would be much too slow and I'm not sure what touchline shooting you could do with 100mm.

Rebates are always a temptation but they don't save you a bean if you buy the wrong lens because of them.

I do want it primarily for Macro photography, just thought with the ol' USM it *may* be suitable for another task too (which would mean I wouldn't be buying the 70-200L... yet)

I am using a borrowed one, and agree that it is slow to focus, so would say it is a Macro lens that can be used for other things, rather than an all rounder. I have some of Jessops extension thingies that make my 50mm lens do macro, but not as well as the Canon 100mm.
So, seems that you get what you buy - a macro lens for macro or a cheaper alternative that will manage both but not excel at either. For macro, it is a wonderful lens.

It might be worth looking at the Sigma 150mm as an alternative - a cracking lens with much better AF performance

I remember using a friends 100mm macro before they put the usm motor in it. You think the usm version is slow. This redefined slow but it was pin sharp.

Love the lighting on this one Witch, can I pick your brains please and ask how you set it up?

Thanks
Ali

Thanks! It was a bit of a cobbled together affair. The back ground is a black Polo-shirt, and the only way I could get the lighting I wanted was by setting the shot up and then killing all the room lights. I then fired the shutter and lit the rings with an LCD torch - loving it to make sure the stones caught the light. Once the shot was safely into PhotoShop I then burnt out any texture that was showing from the fabric below the rings. I never did manage to work out any way of lighting it so that the texture didn't show!

Well I knew that it did not look to be "out of the box" but that's brill! lol.
Well done you!
