I'm currently pulling my hair out trying to choose a camera, I was told that nikon and canon are the Market leaders etc so obviously my choice is between them.

Is it worth justifying a extra £100 for the nikon for a newbie to dslr's or will a canon do?

Also Sony A390 what are these like seem cheap is there a reason why? Are they any comparison to the above?

I'm looking at taking pictures of cars, a bit of scenery, animals (my dog) and maybe my footy team if I'm sub. Lol.

Cheers in advance

I'm afraid there is a generic answer here. The only way to distinguish them is to get to a shop and try them out. Hold them, fondle them, go through the menus.
Whichever feels most comfortable and intuitive to you is the one to go for.

But as a comparison with each camera statistics is the nikon worth a extra £100

either will be good but the Nikon specs are way better as is the build quality (dont take my word for that go and handle both the difference is massive)

that said I think there is a new entry level Canon out which may change things. try them by all means but you will quickly get used to either so in some respects the "feel" of the camera is over rated.

Just found the d3100 for £429 think I will get that

Dont agree there. I had a 50d for several months and didnt get used to it, hence spending a fourtune on switching back to Nikon.

I was thinking of collecting instore I'm impatient n CBA to wait for it to arrive

as they say once a Nikon man always a Nikon man! If you hadnt had Nikon before you wouldnt have known the difference!

Quite possible I suppose. Although I wonder if some systems just suit people better, regardless if what they have gotten used to. They say there is a man or woman out there for everyone but you may never find eachother , I wonder if the same is true with cameras?

Thanks for the advice guys going into town now to test and hopefully buy

Not another nikon vs canon thread ......... please ............

It isn't going that way.
It's just someone asking for advise on which camera to choose, and so far they've received only helpful advise.

There's a new 1100D coming out sometime very soon.
Might be worth considering, or waiting till the 1000D price drops for stock clearance?

I'd second everyone else's advise, nothing wrong with either camera. Except, IIRC, the 1000D is often paired with the old canon 18-55mm II kitlens, instead of the newer 18-55mm IS. The 18-55 II is a lens to steer clear of, it's quite poor even by kitlens standards. The newer 18-55 IS is much better.

I wouldn't limit yourself to just canon and nikon. The other brands have very good offerings. Have a look at a pentax K-x, it's a very good little camera.
Canon and nikon are market leaders only because they have the largest lens selections, pro level bodies and a reputation. Unless you need a full frame (none of "others" but Sony offer a full frame camera [yet]) and one of the lenses the other brands have no equivalent to (like a 500mm f/4 or 200mm f/2), the other brands won't hold you back in any way. They have an advantage over canikon as well, in that they offer in body stabilisation so you can use it on all types of lenses, rather than just lenses that have optical stabilisation.

i have a sony a390 and it's doing the job i need it for, i'm still a relative novice having only been into photography for a year and having a dslr since august-ish. i was looking at the canon 1000d and nikon d3000/d5000 along with a couple of sony's when i bought mine.

the canon felt rubbish compared to the others, i'm sure it will take great pictures but it's getting on a bit now and has no live-view. the d5000 had a far better spec than the d3000 and had the articulated screen which ruled out the d3000. and in the end it was the price, tilting screen, in-body stability and the overall feel of the sony which won for me.

shortly after when i was looking at the lens choices i wished i had gone for the nikon, then i swung towards wanting a canon and even looked at buying a 40d from the classifieds on here. but just before xmas i got a couple of minolta lenses for my sony and absolutely love them.

for the money you can pick up good minolta lenses, the in-built stability of the sony bodies and the price of the bodies themselves i would recommend sony personally. but the nikon d3100 is getting some pretty solid reviews and there is a canon 1100d on the horizon.

don't forget about olympus and pentax too.

The 1000D takes great shots when paired with good lenses. I used to get some crackers on mine. Nothing shabby about it.
Oh and it does have live view, you hit the set button to activate it.

i didn't say it wouldn't take good pictures, quite the opposite i've seen some shots on here taken with them that i'd be proud to have taken. but when i was buying i didn't like the feel of the camera in my hand, lots of people obviously did like it because there seems to be plenty of them about.

my bad on the live-view issue though

have been a Nikon user for several years . I don't see why would I pay extra, to be honest. well and + I love the canon image look . Nikon and Sony seems to be a bit too oversaturated . but - I'm not talking about the pro series .

Well I purchased a nikon D3100 thanks for all the advice

Good choice, I have few regrets about buying mine. I love the shutter noise, so slick its sexy.

Maybe its time for a D3100 users thread.

Good luck with it, I'm sure you'll love it.
