Yes
Thinking of selling my 1000d and getting a 30d, the ergonomics of the 1000d are getting annoying now so need something bigger and want the dual exp dials, im also pretty skint so the 30d seems to fit the bill. How will the ISO performance compare to the 1000d? what i see online the 30d looks better and obviously goes higher by 1 stop, Do y'all think its worth making the change?

I'm not a pixel peeper and to be honest the 1000d rarely offends me at iso800/1600, its not that noise isn't there its just that it never really bothers me lol, so i was kind of thinking the 30d would be the same in that regard..? How is the focus on the 30d? the focus is pretty poor on my camera really, i mean, it works...sometimes lol There is a part of me though that is thinking just save save save and get the 5d classic ;) lol

Personally the 5D classic is a much much better camera next to the 30D.

Having used both quite extensively the classic 5D still astounds me next to the current crop of bodies.

My 30D has also produced plenty of workable images, I just do feel the 5d is fantastic value for money.

I am seriously tempted to go the extra for the 5d especially as there getting cheap now, i was trying to sensible in thinking about a 30d but the more i think about it....... ;)

One thing too consider though, none of your ef-s lens (if you have any) will work with the 5d.
How about a compromise and go for a 40/50d

luckily im not too heavily invested in ef-s stuff so im not too worried there, a 50d would be nice i was lusting after 1 of them when i got my 1000d

Good advice, and preferably the 50D if you want a proper upgrade with regard to IQ and resolution as opposed to just a handling upgrade.

Personally id try and save up a few more pennies.

The 30D isnt great at high iso by any means.

It shouldn't be exactly awful either. I had a 20D which as far as I know was pretty much the same and it could be used at all ISO's up to and including 3200. If you don't do anything silly like under expose and the boost the exposure post capture ISO 3200 should be perfectly acceptable. My 20D's was.

Having said all that. These cameras are getting a bit old now so if I was looking for one I'd want a good condition and low shutter count one.

If focus performance is a concern for you I don't think you'll be too impressed with the system in the 5D. It's best described as adequate :D and AFAIK is of a similar generation to that of the 30D.

I have a 1000d and upgraded to 1d mk2 an old camera but a goodie

It depends on what you class as useable.

I class 3200 as just about useable on my 1d3, the 30D doesn't come close to that.

I loved my 30D however sensor wise it really isn't that great.

Here's a 20D ISO 3200 test shot...

This shot has had minimal processing and certainly no heroic measures or excessive NR and yet noise is perfectly acceptable, at ISO 3200, hardly visible even, as it's been well exposed and not boosted post capture. I found real world shots to be just as acceptable :D I have a 5D and yes, it is better but it's not night and day IMVHO.

.

I could only second that.

Yes, Only 1-series, 7D and 5DIII have significantly better AF.
but IQ-wise 5D is much better than 50D or all earlier XXD cameras.

That ISO3200 shot there is displayed in tiny size, so that doesn't tell the whole story. If they are perfectly exposed they are OK for web, but not much else, and have no processing latitude.

I beg to differ. It's not worth my time to bend the truth and if anyone wants the full sized image I'll supply it.

My point was/is that a 20D / 30D should be capable of perfectly acceptable ISO 3200 shots. My only caviat is that the exposure has to be good and not boosted post capture.

Not that I'm pushing the idea of a 30D too much, I did add that these cameras are getting on a bit now.
