Yes
I have been looking for a Canon DSLR for many weeks now, primarily focusing on the second hand market and in particular the 450D/500D.

However, I have now seen that Canon outlet (operated by digital river) now have 1000D's available with the double lens option.

This includes the 1000D body, 18-55mm kit lens and 75-300mm Canon lens which seems to be worth around £80 second hand on it's own. The price for the package is £279.99 + £2.95 which I think is good value for money as it also includes a 1 year warranty.

I'd like to use it as a hobby, take the camera on holiday with me, various days out and also for my baby which will be born in September. If I start now it gives me plenty of time to start practising.

Now I understand it isn't cutting edge technology, it's not a 600D for instance. I'm looking for a value camera to teach me the basics and also to see if I enjoy photography. I previously had a Sony Alpha A230 but that hardly got used.

My other option is a refurbished 500D for £329.99 (from the same seller) but this only comes with the 18-55mm kit lens.

Would this be suitable and is it a good starting point?

The 1000D is still a decent camera (for what it is), snap it up and sell the long lens, which isn't particuarly good. Then put that money towards a much better Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS, which should set you back £100-120 used. Note, if the kit lens is the non-IS version, it's not up to much, but is OK as a starter lens.

I'd go for the 500D - for similar reasons as above - it's slightly more flexible in terms of options, slightly better built - the 75-300 lens isn't one of Canon's finest (nor has it been since it was introduced - I had one - sold it, SWMBO had one before I met her and sold it).

The 55-250 seems to be a popular addition - and makes sense to go with the 18-55 with no gap.

Of course the choice of lenses is really driven by what you want to take photographs of... if motor-racing is your thing, you need long, if it's landscapes or portraits then you need to look shorter...

I got the 500D from jessops with the twin lens kit. I'm loving it and will keep me going a good while. I asked the chap in jessops if I should by the 500D or the 1000/1100D and he told me the 500D was the better buy.

Ultimately at our newbie level I doubt we would notice the marginal differences.

If you think you will use the tele lens, go for the two lens option, if not go for the 500D.

I got my 20D from the Canon refurb store and it is still going strong.

Canon Outlet often do some very good deals. Depending on what type of photography you want to do the 500D & 18-55 IS or the 1100D and 18-55 IS may be a better deal. Eitherway there are some very good deals by Canon Outlet
