I was looking to buy a speedlite 270ex for my 450d camera, would this be a wise move for night and indoor photography, what advantages would this have over the build in flash?

I've been looking at this, too, and the consensus seems that you're much better off getting the 430ex ii. That's what I'm after. You can't tilt and rotate the 270ex from what I can gather, which limits it a lot.

I'd recommend the 430ex or any of the similar flash guns with adjustable heads. The flash is stronger and better distributed on all the models but with the tilt you can bounce off of walls and ceilings for a better even light on the subject

My advice would be to head over to mpb photographic and grab yourself a Canon 430ex.

270EX is a great little gun, the emphasis being on little. It will fit in a shirt pocket. It is also more powerful than the guide number suggests, if you compare like with like, it's 2/3rds of a stop down on a 430EX/EXII, which is tons more than the pop-up.

It will do bounce-vertical but nothing else, and it also has to be controlled via the camera menu. You can get a Stofen for it, or a cheap clone off Amazon. It has high speed sync, which nothing else does at anything like this price bracket.

In a nutshell, it's small and cheap, and does the basics very well, HSS is a bonus, but if you want a lot of power and extensive bounce veratility, you'll need something bigger.

Thanks for the advice, as the 430 ex is a little out of my price range, i've just been looking at the nissin di622 mk2, reviews seem okay any thoughts or should i try for cannon 320ex, if i can stretch to it.

Look for a used mk1, instead of a new/used mk2.

You could try sigma 610 flash from wex great flash ttl mode
And manual very powerful flash and not a bad price at £129
For canon fit and it tilts and swivels just got it as my first
Flash really easy to use too

I recently bought a used 270EX MKII for my 50D from the sale section and have to say it's a great little flash. I just wanted something for close up fill and also macro when not using the MP-E 65/MT24EX combo and it does the job fine. HSS is a bonus as is the fact you can also use it as a infared shutter release.

I do very little flash work so it's perfect for me and easy to carry round in the pocket.

I started off with a 270 and I found it great as an introduction to flash. It has 3 positions forwards, 45 degrees up and 90 degrees up so I have found myself taking shots with the camera in a portrait position to bounce it off the wall. The menu system is easy enough and I'd say the 270 is miles better than on-camera flash so if it's all you can go for then it's better than nothing :) The shot below was taken with the 270 bounced off the wall to my left

p.s I bought mine from a TP member and saved a few extra pennies

If you are buying a new one, They are more expensive than a 2nd hand 430ex

Some of those flashes at MPB don't picture the stand that comes with them originally.

Are you to assume the stand doesn't come with the flash if it's not pictured?

The stand is only needed if you want to do off camera flash.

However, in the description, it tells you everything that comes with it (usually).

Yeah, I know. Ideally the description should clarify what it doesn't come with, as well as what is included. I've emailed them to clarify.

You will always get good service from MPB

I'm thinking of going for it anyway. It's only a few quid to get a stand on ebay if I find I need one.

You wont regret it

Bought! Turns out it's boxed with the stand and all. :D

It's not the mk2, but I'm sure I'll be happy with the original 430ex.

I use an original 430ex and an original 580ex, and I'm more than happy with both. I think you've got yourself a good thing there, especially since its about the same price as a new 270ex

Ordered at 2:30pm yesterday. Arrived in my humble Northern Irish abode 30 minutes ago.

Absolutely FANTASTIC service from MPB. In far better condition than stated, and with the proper box, manual, stand, and pouch.

Top notch!

Hate to say it, but I told you so

MPB are fantastic, I know quite a few people on here that rate their service highly and they always understate the condition which is a nice surprise when the item arrives :)

No worries, glad I could be of some help! :)
