Hi there, Iam new to DSLR and love photographing birds.
My question is: Is it easy to capture pin sharp images at a distance with a 70-300 lens fully open? I have tried several times with mixed results, non of them as sharp as I would like.

Thanks

I have had that lens and camera. I found using it at 300mm produced soft images. Go down to 200-250 and it was much better

Thanks Doddy1974, I have had soft images and thought it was something I was/wasn't doing.Don't want to sound stupid but what is the point of having a 300mm range if it doesn't produce desired result?

I think (and someone will correct me if I am wrong!) on the "cheaper" lens, at full zoom they will be soft, I have it on my 55-250mm lens. Whereas if you buy an "L" lens, you could use it at maximum zoom and still produce sharp pics. All to do with quality etc!

The 70-300 isn't going to give you stellar images, it is just a consumer grade lens, also 300mm is a bit short for birds. The cheapest long lens options are the Sigma 120-400 and the 150-500 which would go some way to giving you the IQ you desire at a reasonable cost.

Thanks again, will step down to 250 and see what results that produces.
