Hi all thinking of getting this lens Cannon 400mm 5.6L lens
date code is uw0516
using it for sport and wildlife
any help would be great

I bought a used one earlier this year. The hood is the bit to check. It's integrated with the body and there's a rubber seal which can get pinched and pulled out of it's groove if the hood is over tightened. That can then jam and as you try to loosen it other damage can follow.

Check that the hood operation is smooth and not jammed at all. The lens itself should be mega-sharp.
 
As long as you can live with the fact it has no IS its a great lens.

This^^ Get it on a monopod for low light/slowish shutter speeds. Job done.
 
It's a super lens. Sharp and not too heavy to carry around. Lack of IS is the only drawback but it can be hand held although a monopod is so much better.
 
I've been very impressed with mine, since buying earlier in the year. It isn't a lens i use much, but I bought it specifically for shooting at Spa earlier in the year. I was so impressed with the sharpness paired with the 5dmk3 that I've kept it, though only using it for motorsport and rare nature trips.
I'd love to use it in the mountains for some tele goodness, but I can't deal with the extra weight to my kit bag for climbing.
For sharp longer focal length shots, you're onto a winner with this one!
