Yes
I found my dads old camera bag, and inside it has 7 hoya filters. They are 52mm. Would these have any use for modern lenses? Or have any resale value?

Probably not but there is no harm trying. 52mm is a bit small for a lot of lenses so you'll be lucky if they fit. A polariser could be worth keeping but 'effects' filters like soft focus etc are a bit redundant now with photoshop etc.

Oh actually they are 58mm.

One of them is PL-CIR. Maybe thats a polariser?

Yes. circular polariser - great for nice deep blue skies when the sun is to the left or right of you. Has next to no effect when sun is overhead or in front/behind you.

The only filter you can't use on a modern camera is a Linear Polariser as it messes with the auto focusing system.

Not doubting that is generally correct but out of curiosity i just held an old linear polariser in front of the 5D (thread does not fit any lens i have) and it focussed just as fast as when it is not there!

Never tried it myself, but its what i've always been told. Probably a ploy by filter manufacturers to increase sales.

The polariser is £23 new... i'll be putting these in the for sale section as soon as ive got my 100 posts! Is there any way around this 100 post minimum? I only post to ask questions since i dont have an extensive knowlesge of photography.

No way round it - you have to qualify!

You don't need 'extensive knowledge' to tell people in the sharing section what you do or don't like about the pictures they post ;)
