I've bought a laptop via this forum which is due to arrive in the next few days. I planned to use it with a olmec op1000 printer however just found out the newest version of windows that is supported by the printer is vista and the laptop has win 7.

Can I uninstall Win 7 and replace with Vista? If so how do I go about this?

If I can't it's not a huge problem, but I would prefer to use the new laptop with printer and upload cards to as it's faster, rather than using it as a viewing station.

Thankyou in advance :)

vista drivers normally work with 7 so it may be worth a go trying first.

technically possible if you have the media, cant remember if MS give you a legal path to downgrade any more though. although some 7 hardware may not work under vista.

I've read on the net that the printer only has drivers up to Vista and definitely doesn't work on 7?

I'm very confused, not a computer person let alone a Windows user... I love my iMac but needed Windows for work use and it's sounding very complicated!

As suggested by Neil try the vista driver on win7 first. I have had a similar issue with graphics cards and the vista driver worked fine on win7.

It's not really a windows problem, it is rather rare, most stuff you just need to plug in and the driver will be installed automatically. :)

For this I'd try that first, it may find and download automatically. It's very odd that something that works with Vista doesn't work with Windows 7 (as Win 7 is just a minor evolution of Vista). It may be the case that being old (i assume) it only has 32 bit drivers which don't work with x64 Windows (had that problem with an old printer I had).

If you have the latest version of an operating system (currently Win 7) you are allowed to roll back to a previous version under the licence purchased. Often the newer hardware has not been used under the older OS and the vendors may not have drivers available for older OS. Typically new developments like USB 3 may not work on Vista for example and things like wireless cards can be a problem.

As others have said there is a chance it will work with Win 7 definitely worth a try as Vista was the worst OS ever released by Microsoft in my 25 years in the industry.

Thanks that's helpful to know. I know Vista is useless as have it on my current laptop, however I've got an Olmec OP1000 coming and it won't work on Win7 so I need to either put Vista back on the new win7 laptop or use my old laptop that has vista on it...

Yes. Definitely find a way of running the printer in some other way (Vista drivers on Win 7 or a virtual machine). Don't cripple 99% of what you do for the 1% that is incompatible...
