Hi all,

Is there a way of telling how many shots a DSLR has taken. I come from a video background and my cameras have hours run/operation meters.

I have seen a second hand cameras saying that only used for 1,000 shots or operations.

depends on the brand - e.g. there are programmes that an end-user can use for Canon & Nikon but afaik only a Sony service centre can read total count for a Sony.

Pretty much everything 350D onwards has shutter count on it as far as the lower spectrum of Canon cameras go. Easiest way to tell is to take a picture and just read the picture number on the file name.

Download Opanda Iexif Viewer and use it to open a picture that's just been taken with the camera (needs to be JPEG, not RAW).

It will list loads of values, towards the end you will find one called "Total Number of Shutter Releases for Camera".
