Can you recommend a place for larger prints?

Yes
Who would you recommend for larger prints? I normally use DSCL but there's a bit of a jump in price past a certain size. Size in question is 40x50cm

Thanks

The jump in price is due to the process going from a traditional silver halide "wet" press to an ink jet.

I would recomend Loxley for good quality larger prints but I work there so could be seen as biased.

If you have a high street shop that does large format printing, I would try them. No postage charge, no chance of the carriers damaging the print, less time spent rolled so less coiling of the print once you have it and a chance to look at the result before forking out on it. There's also the benefit of knowing (if all goes well!) that there's a local supplier who can do any further large prints should you need them. My local camera shop can do prints up to 24" wide and as long as you want - I use the service for panoramas, I resize them to 24" wide and create a single image from several and get them done as a single print then cut them down to individual pics at home. IIRC, the local SnappySnaps offers the same service.

I can highly recommend www.1stprints.co.uk which is my local printers that I use regularly to give to wedding clients. He mainly deals with local people that can come and collect from him but I'm pretty sure he would also post out to you. An A2 sized print is just £15 + P&P and the print quality will match anything you can get from DSCL or Loxley.

You'll find Steve's number on the website. Give him a call and tell him Rob from Black Bull Photography recommended him to you.

I know boots do them all so happy snaps . You can look online

I've just had three copies of a family portrait printed at Foto and I'm pretty pleased with the quality. It is on glossy but colour rendition is very very close to on-screen. Being hypercritical, it's maybe a touch blurry close up but that's probably more to do with me blowing up a 16MP to 50cm x 66cm. Price was very reasonable: £27 for three copies including postage.

I have used Loxley for years never a problem. Great service

This looks good as Preston is about 18 miles away. looking at his Facebook site he charges £3.20 for an A3 print whereas DSCL charge £1.15.The latter has a pretty hefty p&p charge so are you saying that the quality at 1st prints is good enough to make the trip? I don't print a lot but I am badgered by my family to do it more so a local business would be useful

I've used foto.com twice now... 50 x 75 and 150 x 60 and been really impressed.

I was his front door on my way to and from work every day so for me being able to collect it easy and convenient. If you want to find out if he's worth the trip then send him an A3 print as a test and see how you like it. If you only get the occasional print then it works out cheaper than paying the p&p online so if you don't mind the 18 mile trip it could be worth it.

Thanks Rob - I would rather have the trip than trust to the post anyway and in any event i may be able to pick his brains for the best treatment of different prints
@Blasted - hope this doesn't smack too much of hijacking the thread but it has been very useful to me.

Loxley :)

Didn't realise 1stprints are in Preston. Useful to know about this, as I'm down the road in Chorley and I can't print bigger than A3+ at home. The website says A2 prints are £6, which is cheaper than I pay at Photobox.

I think that the website has been abandoned in favour of Facebook and so the prices seem out of date. On Facebook an A2 is now £8

Is that a wallpaper print including a faux pine frame? I can't see any shadows to suggest a three-dimensional presence.

Just a poster print set behind perspex, it is a real pine frame (hand made by myself). Pine is 18mm thick routed out from behind to accept the perspex and 9mm MDF to back it (for rigidity and strength).

About £75 all in plus my labour :)
