I need to network 2 computers together, one is a laptop running on windows vista, the other could be a macbook.... is there any way they can run together i.e. upload photos onto the macbook and they then be networked/synched to view on the laptop?

Toying with the idea of buying a macbook but need to make sure it will run alongside a windows laptop on the stand... I already have a iMac and if I can help it don't want to buy another windows laptop if I can buy a macbook and it still work.

:help:

on Mac, you set a shared folder to share using SMB protocol. Windows only understands SMB (full name SAMBA).

network syncing depends on your software, eg. you can setup scheduled tasks to run Rsync. rsync runs across both Mac and Windows.

or visa versa, set up a share on the windows machine and get the mac to access that.
indeed.

to access Windows share on Mac, you select Finder, then on the top menu select Go to Network location, type in SMB://[windows laptop name]/

So it can be done, is it fairly easy to do? I would want the macbook to run as the main and upload cards and print from it, then the laptop to be a viewing station.

Also the macbook I am looking at only has 1gb of ram, is this a bit problem? Considering my imac has 4gb. If it is a problem, can I upgrade ram?

SMB = Server Message Block. It's also known as CIFS (Common Internet File System). Samba is an open source implementation of SMB.

oh, okay. i didn't know that. thanks!

1GB RAM shouldn't be any problem as long as you don't edit photos on it.
