Can you make a decent website from scratch

Hi all,

My pictures are building up and i need to make a website as a portfolio. Ive used tripod and myspace and both looked unproffesional and were frankly a bit rubbish. Ive seen some great websites that look high tech and modern ect and i would like to create one that looked half decent. Can i make a site on something like publisher then use photoshop for the layout ect then use another website to host it, or do i have to use one of these website builders with premade layouts.

Another drawback is i have no money, and im not really willing to spend anything so ....
 
You can make your own from scratch. It will take time and effort. There are plenty of templates available on the web if you so wish, or you can use a website builder like mrsite. It depends on how good you are with computers, how much time you have and what result you want at the end of it really.

I think it's worth getting your own domain - doesn't have to cost much. Then you can use something like coppermine or movable type if you don't know html and don't want to buy software. If you want to design your own site - you generally have to buy your own space to host it on. Myspace always seems to look awful but blogger can look quite good and you can customise it quite easily.
 
Ive just made mine from scratch, based around the very good monoslideshow flash gallery. Another good one to look at is Simpleviewer. :)
 
If all you want is a gallery there are plenty of good free ones out there that you can use/customise Gallery2 or Coppermine for example. If you want more than that then how much more? tell us.

it is free by the way and you can get 250mb free storage, mine doesn't look to bad but you could go for the sheek black look which looks even better

I've designed and made my site all by myself. No templates used or anything. Only thing i did borrow was the script that helps create the gallery, but even that is modified to my own design/colours.

If your completely new to the game and dont want to learn html/css/php etc..then best to get a simple template and work from there. If you want to eventually sell photos from your site, then you'll need a domain name of your own. People will trust you more if you have your own domain name rather than hosted on a free hosting site.
