I can't comment on the 580, but I am able to trigger my Jessops flash with the onboad... set the flash into slave mode, and make sure the front of the base is pointed at the camera. The light from the onboard triggers the Jessops flash with an optical trigger. Means you have to have line of sight, and you have to have the onboard active, but it works. I would expect the 580 would be able to operate in the same way.
No, you cant do it. You need a master unit to do that, which your 580EX is, but the on-board is not.
You can't do it with a normal optical slave attached to the 580EX either, as that will fire ahead of sync off the pop-up's pre-flash which cannot be disabled. (The E-TTL system fires two flashes for every picture, one for exposure measurement and then the main flash for the exposure. They are so close together you cannot distinguish them visually.)
You need a radio trigger like a Yongnuo RF-602 set for under £30 from Flash In the Pan (see the advertisers' section).
