Hi folks,

I'm heading to Egypt soon and I want to take some shots of my son. I will probably be using nice wide apertures to allow him to pop in the image but knowing that it will be very bright outside I will no doubt need an ND filter which I know nothing about. I have just bought an XT1 and will probably buy the 90mm or 56mm lens unless I decide to take my canon gear but ether way I'll be shooting at anything from f1.2-f4 ish.

Not too fussed about the filter size just yet till I figure out which camera I'm taking just looking for makes and models.

Lastly do you guys think a 4 stop is the way to go? I'm open to suggestions.

Regards

Scott

If using the ES on the Fuji then 3 stops should be more than enough, and you may not even need a filter. The 90mm is an absolute belter of a lens, and the 56 is none too shabby, both take 62mm diameter filters. 3 stops will not introduce significant colour cast, so I would have thought that any named filter supplier should be good enough. My preference would be for either Hoya ProND (mid price point) or Hitech Firecrest (high price point).

Definitely get a filter to fit the lens as you may well need the hood to avoid bright sun glar, and the Fuji Hoods will go one after a filter has been applied.

Sorry that I can't suggest what strength of ND filter you need for your trip but what I can say is that I regularly use a Hoya Pro ND8 (3 stop) on my Canon 70-300 for motor racing and have always been delighted with the results.
