I was sitting doing a couple of essays earlier and my internet went down. I thought i'd pop out and take some photos for examples of depth of field for a class tomorrow and it seems like either my lens is missing focus by some distance or the right side focus points on my 5d mk2 are not working properly. Anyone had this happen or is it more likely to be the lens? I'm using a Sigma 50mm art and 5d mk2 combo. I tried to shoot a gravestone and it focuses on the grass behind and to the left. Then again i noticed when i focused on a gravestone again it focused on a rood again behind and to the left. Any advice appreciated.

Focus point in wrong place?
Reseat lens on camera?
Factory reset camera?

Might help if you upload the photo for us to see what's going on

Plus a fuller description of your camera settings especially which focus points you are selecting and whether to are indeed locking AF on the selected subject oh, are you focusing and recomposing by any chance???

Hi guys,

I was using the furthest to the right point and then the one above it. Settings were av and the only thing I was changing was the aperture. Subject was a gravestone around 7 feet in front of me which was obviously not moving and the focus seemed to lock. No recomposing whatsoever. I am on my phone but I'll try to upload a couple of pictures tomorrow night. Never used the outside points before as I usually use centre point.

The outer points on the 5dII aren't as reliable as the centre point. In good conditions they're perfectly adequate, but in tricky conditions they become useless.

So, the answer may well be just that, depending on the conditions, rather than your technique or other variables.

It was really nice here yesterday and the camera was tripod mounted and the stone shouldn't have been a challenging subject. I'm going to ask one of the guys in the class if they can have a go at calibrating the lens on the off chance as he's a very experienced photographer who is doing this course just because he's retired. After that I'll know more. I always have up till now used the centre point and the lens has seemed fine but we'll see. Thanks guys.

Have you tried using a different lens to see if you get the same result, that will at least tell you whether it's the lens or camera body with the issue. You could also try manual focus with the screen.
