Can I connect a Garmin eTrex GPS to a Nikon D700 and if so, with which cable?

So, the title says it all!

I'm going dizzy, Googling around trying to find out the answer to this question and it occurred to me that someone here is bound to know.

Quite simply, my D700 is GPS compatible, but I don't know if I can use the Garmin eTrex H hand-held GPS (which I've just ordered) with it, to record position information on my photographs.

Don't get me wrong - I didn't order the GPS for that reason, but I'd be interested to know if it could also serve that purpose!?

it depends on the type of port on the gps unit but you will need something like this

The GPS unit only cost £60!!! Guess I'll resort to pen & paper, for recording where images were captured.

Or, you could just use one of these.

Not sure how well this works, or how much it costs. By the looks of how things are being priced now, I wouldn't be surprised to hear it costing about the same price of a D3

Set your eTrex to record your tracks, download your tracks to your computer and use the software to geocode your images. It's very simple and works brilliantly.

Long and short of it is, yes, you can use your Garmin eTrex with a D700 but not necessarily directly, and you don't need that £100 cable for it either!

I use a Garmin eTrex Vista HXc something or other, i dont connect it to the camera, you set it to the same time as the gps unit and carry it with you, as you take pics the garmin records the position, then you use software to merge the track from the garmin and the files (it matches the time stamps) it works a treat called geotagging. Several decent programs out there, including a plugin for Lightroom.

The method that I use with my D700 is to use one of these - MC35 JJC GPS Adapter http://www.ultimatenaturegear.co.uk...mpatible_MC35_GPS_Adapter___1463.htm?Overview - with a Garmin Etrex GPS receiver and the DB9 PC cable that it comes with. The MC35 mentioned in the link works with this type of connector (9 pin 'D') only, not USB.

The DB9 cable connects to the Etrex at one end, the other end to the MC35. The MC35 connects to the D700 ten pin input, and is secured in the flash hot shoe.

Thanks for all of the info, folks .

The main reason for me buying the Garmin, was to stop me getting lost when wandering around the woods , so the Nikon GPS attachment wouldn't really have been of any help.

Also, I just wanted to know if there was a low cost, low hassle way to "tag" images on the move. It seems that I'm asking a bit too much there, for the moment at least . Still, if I ever get the urge to get into serious geotagging, I'll consider investing in the software and cables mentioned here.
