I'll try to be diplomatic, for the 52 challenge photographs, can we use old photographs or do the have to be photographed after the theme has been released, or is it up the the individual.

I mean no offence and I this post is aimed at no particular member. After all, I guess members can do what they like.

Just a general query.

Thanks.

Hi ya Andy

I think the general idea for the 52 is take a shot for the theme once it's announced. However ,Sarah's orignal post at the start of the 52 does say you can trawl your archives if you want to because....Its your 52

Personnaly I've been managing new shots specifically for each theme , right up to Tropical when " my get up n go got up n went " so I posted a couple of older shots rather than play a joker ( or whatever it's called )

My latest post is also a couple of older shots mainly because ( as explained in that post ) from now till the beginning of June I'm just not gonna have time to tog for the challenge .I don't want to quit because 1 month is far too busy so I'm intending to use the themes of Tropical & Power for the next reshoots

Only my opinion of course cos at the end of it it's "Your 52"

does that help in anyway???:)

Hi, just re-read my post and suspect I may be a little tired as I come across as a right grumpy old sod...:$

Well Id have thought a new image for each theme, whats the point of doing a 52 if your using old photos, sure its a take a picture for the current theme and week,or whats the point, wheres the challenge, , I could do a 365 if I used my archived shots,

Not grumpy at all...though 2 large glasses of Amarula Cream may be dulling my senses somewhat:lol:

I'd intended to take new shots for each theme but this month is just manic . I did have to reread the guidlines by Sarah though . & I do feel a touch guilty after checking through your Costa thread:bang:

ps....I've just had to go through this short reply & correct about 10 spelling mistakes...I really shouldn't drink n type:D

My understanding was that rules are up to the individual, though the un-enforced guidelines (if you will) were that each week a new theme is announced and everyone has a week to plan and execute their take on said theme.

RULES

There are no rules; or at least I don’t set any rules for you to follow. The idea is if you want to join in you make your own rules as it is your own personal challenge (but I would encourage you to define and share the rules you have chosen at the start of the year). If you want you can trawl your own archives, shoot 2 weeks behind the theme, have as many JOKERS as you want and there is nothing stopping you using the themes to do a 26 by picking one theme out of every 2.

However, If you want someone to set rules for you please feel free to use the example below:

1) New photos will be taken each week specifically for the theme and only 1 photo will be selected as the shot for the week as this forces me to get out there take photos and pick the image I like best.
2) I may show any other shots taken in the week but if I do I will explain why I selected the shot I did (i.e. what I like about the image and what I don’t like).
3) I will share what I have learned that week and how I might approach it differently next time (or if I had more time)
4) No photos posted as my shot for the week will be posted as an entry into the TP Monthly Competition
5) I will limit myself to 1 JOKER during the entire year and if I decide to play it I will still post a new photo.

The challenge is open to everybody, no matter what level of experience you have.
And if you decide you want to join in part way through the year that's fine too - nobody says you need to start on week 1.

The only other thing I'll add is that you'll get as much out of this as you put in. Get involved, offer critique and encouragement to other 52ers and you'll find that you get the same in return.

I now declare Photo52 2011 open.
Good luck all !!!

All that Joker stuff just seems a bit weird to me, cant see the point of it  whats the point of it, am I missing something  keep it simple take a pic a week thats specific for the theme,

or do your own themes each week for a project that inspires you, sure that was the original idea of 52s, do your own interest rather than being restricted by one set by someone else

Hi Dave

the 52 project is meant to be a fun way to learn , improve & most of all get enjoyment from your photography . By setting hard & fast rules many people,I suspect , would not bother to join in . When other commitments ie family , work , get in the way you can continue with "Your 52" by playing a joker/wildcard instead of throwing in the towel or being " evicted " .

There are times when it is just to hard/difficult to shoot/capture/create an image, for whatever reason , for that weeks drawn theme .

I think the core of 52er's are really enjoying the project & are also learning lots ( I know I am) . You only need to look through some of the threads to confirm this

Yeah know what you mean, about the fixed themes thats been the way for a few years on TP since Simon first started it, Im ok with that but the joker stuff is just daft, evicted from where

Im sure most are enjoying their 52s, just I would not be so restricted and set my own personal challenge after all thats what it was originally about, before themes were set, make your own project and be creative yourself

morning all.. just thought i'd add my 2p (do they still sell penny sweets??)

personally i am taking it to be a chance to grow like has been said... get out there and take a photo or two according to the theme..but i have submitted 2 that were from my collection simply because i thought they were more fitting, but also to showcase a technique i had used.

This is like doing a photography course but instead of one tutor there's a whole raft of opinions and expertise to help you improve or just admire and compliment you on your journey. For me thats worth getting out there each week. Its a showcase for you, not posting indiviudal threads in the other specific forums...though (name escapes fogged brain ).. some1 posted their week 14 in Nude&Glamour because of the content. That was their choice because they wanted to take that style. nice shot too.

There are odd occassions we get behind, and shoot absolutely horrible, ghastly sets for those missing weeks....but its the trying we should applaud.

Maybe it should be suggested we flag a submission as a golden oldie, or a blast from the past..?

Just my thoughts for a sunday morning, thinking about what represents POWER round here....though with Truckfest on at the showground... there's a hell of a lot of POWER ripe for the shooting :D .. shame trucks nor sam janus don't float my boat... :naughty:

ps....I've just had to go through this short reply & correct about 10 spelling mistakes...I really shouldn't drink n type:D

... the other way round tends to be more problematic... :naughty:

Hi, just re-read my post and suspect I may be a little tired as I come across as a right grumpy old sod...:$

not at all andy.. i had this thought over the past couple of weeks.. but only from a head scratching POView for the theme... i don't read rules much and started the 52 on scanning sarah's post :sulk:

lets make the 52 personal..not take the critiques and comments personal

 its a glorious sunday morning here... and i'm going to miss Fortress Wales yet again .. .. now THAT would have been 'power'

Hi, just re-read my post and suspect I may be a little tired as I come across as a right grumpy old sod...:$

Perhaps we could have a special thread for grumpy old sods (and sodettes).

can i just add... or is it just me?? .. but do people (in general across these forums not just 52s) still refrain from giving good comments (ie a well done, at the very least) if they don't see anything wrong with the shots...?

The problem for me is simply keeping up! I'd love to go out each week and think up a angle on the theme and execute it... but the issue is time... To do it properly would on average take me at least four hours or more a week... depending how far away it is etc. Really a morning or an afternoon or an evening in the week. The problem is I just dont always get the time to do it... I could shoot some off the cuff quick pic... but I would not be happy with that.

My 52 will be complete by the year end... I can see myself no doubt filling my last week... which I know I'll have off anyway taking pics... and then use the first week in Jan to complete it...

But I dont think it matters what you do... its your 52... as long as you can walk away at the end of the year with firstly a set of 52 shots that you did your best taking... you are happy with... and in some way from doing it you think all aspects of your photography have improved... then I dont think it particularly matters how you got there! It's your journey... the main thing above all is to enjoy it and not let it become a chore... that's why although im behind... I'm not bothered... I'll get it done!

Thanks for the replies.

I guess you get out what you put in...

Cheers all, now get on and do your Power theme...I've done mine...

Each to their own, but I see it as a challenge to take a photo for each theme, not to do a Blue Peter on the theme.

I'd rather be a few weeks behind (as I am!) than post an old one if time is against me.
But as I say, each to their own and what ever works for them.

Now back to posting my reshoot, which I think was week 16.
